The fittings in the tranny itself I believe are 1/4" pipe thread, or at least they were on the caprice I just helped a friend of mine convert to a LS1. You would need adaptors to convert from there.

Not all GM autos are 1/4" NPT

One of the fittings (I think its the return) on the late model (I think starting in '99 or so) 4L80E is special, has an extended nipple to feed lube to the innards of the trans.

So, it depends upon what you're working on.

Here's what I did for mine. Aeroquip Socketless push on hose;-6 fittings

I used Jiffy tite Quick Disconnect fittings, and some heat insulating sleeve to protect the lines from the heat of the headers. After I'm sure there's no leaks, or problems, I'll pull the sleeve all the way up to the 90 fitting on the tranny

What JustDreamin stated about the 4L80 fitting is correct. The back fitting does have a tube that sticks out about 1 1/2". I just pulled the fitting from my trans yesterday since I need some 90 degree fittings to clear my trans tunnel.
