i dunno. the art of tuning a carb seems to be lost. also, the same goes for ignitions.....
done the right way, the car can run and run very well. if you wanna race it....

if it was mine, and as nice as i have heard, why jack with it? the camaro seems to be a better platform for getting the pro touring look and getting it to work well also....

or, sell the ss454 car off, buy a decent running good looking 350 car and start from there.

Steve, this car isn't a #'s matching car. Originally an LS-5 454 car, but not original engine. I haven't found the codes/casting stuff yet to determine which big block it actually is. It runs quiet and has zero lope, pretty mild engine.

I would like to keep it a BBC, but make it haul *** and still look stock under the hood. That would be fun for this car.

keep it a 454, just a Warhawk or LSX 454. do a carb intake, abear valve covers, and a few other tweaks and it won't look too out of place

I bet its a smogger era truck engine. That said, if its still an original 454 car it's worth a fair chunk of change.

Heres a big fat heavy Pontiac running mid 11's@115... at 4070 pounds. Not even a big cam. Granted, its a Pontiac motor and not a Chevy but the results are what they are. The old motors can be made to run HARD. I'm not denying the new technology isn't better, but at the same time I'll never underestimate a well tuned carbuerated motor, either. I've been on both sides of the fence. Like I said, the explosions in the cylinders don't have a clue as to what motor they are in, nor do they care. Good heads, a properly selected cam and a well thought out and tuned combo will make a monster out of that old big block. If I was more familiar with older Chevies I could help out more.

As far as looking stock and hauling ***, take a look at the F.A.S.T. guys...

sounds kewl still...just look at the F.A.S.T. cars and see how there running on nos style tires..they can be made to run.

454's are known for **** fuel mileage tho. i remember them from the days ong ago. always like that 427 better. the 396 cars around here always seemed to lose the crank when getting into the hp wars..

sounds like its ready for "the works"....

If its torque you want, Caddy 500. Throw some heads and a cam on that puppy and idle your way to bottom 12's, high 11's.

Default 454

My little brother had a 69 that was a 454. It had oval ports on it that had some mild porting, 2.18/ 1.88 valves, 10:1 compression and a lunati hydraulic cam. With a 3.31 gear and 2500 stall in the turbo 400 it ran 12.40's all day long and was fun as hell to drive. It made 400 hp to the wheels and 450ftlbs of torque. I love the lsx motors, but keep this one with the big block. Leave the stock wheels on it and make it a sleeper. You can easily make a 496" stroker with good heads and intake and be very happy with the results. Just my 2 cents, Josh

If it's not a numbers matching car, punt the big block and LSx it. Better power and gas mileage, then you have a nice daily driver.

Keep the 454... an LSX would look too small / weird in there after a 454.. My cousin used to race a chevelle with a 350 and ran some low 10/9's... todays parts are way better then the old day cams.... plus don't expect lots of horsepower from it.. those things are good for great torque right off the line and carry all the way through the rpms

finally a topic i can get involved in, haha. find out what the head casting numbers are, you can make a very decent amount of power on a set of close chambered rec port heads. you could have it in the 10's with cam/valvetrain and bolton parts like intake/carb headers. although 572's are well know for being on tv shows and such, there are much better options for bbc's. i also wouldnt leave out nitrous on a bbc. pm me if youd like.

454 LSX with a big nasty solid cam, carb intake with a Dominator, smoothed and painted orange, relocated coils down under the headers, factory looking air cleaner with the factory 454 sticker.

make a poll, and go from there!
I have heard the theories, and they all sound good, hard to choose IMO.

Keep the Big block. Get some aluminum aftermarket heads and intake, 850 Demon carb, 2" primary long tube headers and a roller cam. Swap in a 4L80 trans if it is an auto, go 5 or 6 speed if it is a stick. 9" rear with 4.11-4.33 gears.
That would be a killer Chevelle.

I'd keep the 12 bolt in it no need for a 9". If gas mileage is not a concern go with a 502 or 540. I would add a 4L80E or T56 as well. Resale on the big motor would be better as well. The LSx just has not caught on as well in the A-bodies as the early f-bodies.

If you have a cowl hood with the flapper door I do not think a tall deck 572 will clear. IMO the flapper door is very

I have a 70 SS396 Chevelle at home as well. The car has basically sat since I started playing with 6 speed efi cars with my '94 Z28 back in '96. We do get spoiled once you learn how to play with the new cars. I keep playing with the idea of an efi BBC vs. LSx. I may end up doing a 408 iron block who knows. Nothing looks like a BBC in a Chevelle.

Chevelles.com has a topic in the Engine section and another in the pro-touring area on the LSx vs BBC debate running now.
