I'm looking for a body right now for such a swap. Looking for a 98+ Camaro to rip apart. Plans are a Duramax with Allison 1000 behind it, Denny's DS and a Strange 12-bolt. Doing research on fuel cells for the project right now.

That would be a brutal machine if you could make the engine fit the chassis and build a suspension that would accept all the extra weight of the Duramax.

The Camaro has lots of hood choices, there are a few that will fit and not look bad. It can be done. There will also have to be some relief in the cowl. Alot of people have already explored cowl relief and hood clearance due to other projects. None of that is new stuff. There are people with Maggie's on the F-bodies.
Plus, with all the turbo's out there, noone said I have to run the stock turbo in that location.

I thought about the weight issue. I don't have a Iron block LSX to weigh to compare, but I'm betting it won't be to bad. Chassis will definately have to be strong, especially with alot of Banks mods. I'm in the early stages IMO, but have done alot of research thus far.
It helps to have a Duramax and Allison in the garage aswell.

I've seen the 4L80E transmision used behind a Duramax in full size vans. If you wanted something smaller and lighter this might be the way to go. It should survive if used in a lighter vehicle like a car.

thanks for the link. that car is perfect. I've always dreamed about having diesel powered car but the only things out are punky mercedes and vw's.

maybe a car company will get smart and introduce a fullsize car with a huge diesel motor in it.

Yeah, everyone makes fun of Pimp My Ride, but those guys do some pretty awesome stuff.

They ran it on bio-diesel too!

As far as weight goes, I think the Duramax's power compensates for that.

Yeah, got one in the garage. But thanks.

I've thought about the 4L80 E, I'm going to see if the Allison will come close when the time comes. Again, Looking for a Camaro body right now. When the right one comes along, I'll ****** it up and begin.

I've seen Iron blocks in F-bodies not make much difference, although I don't have one. So if someone does and would like to shed some light on handling differences, please do. Where are you seeing the major weight coming from? The tranny may be an issue, but toward the center of the car, I'm hoping not a large one.

I have also been thinking about a Chevelle, and not ruling it out by any means. I'll see when I pick up a 4th gen F-body. If it doesn't look possible in testing, maybe I'll pick up a Chevelle. But I have a feeling it will fit with some help. Plus, it would just be cool. As far as smoking, a cat and Banks will handle that.

it will definently be a tight fit... and I agree with the allison being pretty heavy. I would almost consider using a caprice with the LT1 or something. It has a frame, very large engine cavity, come pretty cheap too...
