Default S-10, quick questions

Alright guys, I've got a couple quick questions for some of you with experience. I recently came upon an s10 with a rod knocking, and I want to put a v8 in it (preferably an lt1 or cheaper for cost reasons). It's a 2wd 4 cyl, what are my options for motors to put in it, and about how much would it cost to get running? I don't plan on any major go-fast mods yet, I just want to get it running first.

BTW, I want to keep it streetable, but I wouldn't mind building it for mid-high 11's. Also, my DD Talon is fully gutted and has a 6-puck clutch, so I don't really mind those minor inconveniences for a daily driver.

Cheapest would most likely be a Vortec 350 from a 96-99 truck/SUV or 96-'02 Express van.
You are at a disadvantage starting with the 2.2 for cost reasons, but it is still probably the cheapest.
Not going to get you 11's though

Ok that was one of the setups I was wondering about, thanks.

A vortec isn't really a bad choice though. Accessories off a a 4.3 work on a 5.7 and you won't have many problems in reguard to that. The biggest restriction on the vortecs is the fuel system in the intake manifold. The Vortec heads are essentally iron convential coolant flow copies of LT1 heads. They can do good, but you would need to work on the fuel system to get it into the 11's. Nothing is gonna get you into the 11's stock anyways particularly if you are looking for something cheap.

Cheapest is an old 350. You can't build anything cheaper than a carbed 350, and depending on what you want to spend on it, you can get some serious HP. Nothing fancy here, get a cooling system setup, make some motor mounts, add a TH350 or a 700R4, run a fuel line at 6psi (could adapt your current pump assembly using an aftermarket regulator and the return line), Connect the distributor, starter and alternator and you are off to the exhaust shop. Maybe not the coolest swap, but there are TONS of books and sites about adding a GEN 1 SBC to an S-10.

Well I just traded my 308 and all its go-fast parts for a built 358, so $ isn't really that much of a factor now . The 358 has a scat crank and keith black pistons, setup for nitrous, and a bunch of other goodies. Dyno'ed around 560-580 on motor in an older s10, so I decided to go with a t56 so I don't keep chewing up 4.3 trannys (hoping I won't need a new bellhousing?).
Any clutch recommendations, I'm not sure what will fit.
Also, what rearend should I go for? I will probably be spraying around 300, so I seriously doubt a 4.3 rear will hold up very long.
