Default wiring up the ls1 starter?

i just attached my jeeps starter cables to the ls1 starter ports (almost an exact fit) but the starter still doesnt crank. theres a long screw stud on the back of the starter that looks like something use to be connected there, could this be the problem? if so what is that stud for?

or does the starter need to be mounted to the engine in order for it to work?

thanks

You need to have the Starter Wire from the Ignition Switch going to the one with the 3/8" nut, then the Positive from the Battery will be connected to one of the Solenoid Terminals. It has to be connected to the Block, that is how it's gets the Negative side of the Circuit.
