Default Cruise control in a conversion?

Has any one used the LS1 cruise control module in a non cruise vehicle? What did you use for switches? How did it work out?

I have the cruise module installed in my 87 from a 99 Z28. I havent wired it up yet...but I plan to just use either my stock cruise/turn signal lever or the 4th gen one. Havent decided. But it seems pretty simple to hook up.

You need to have the NON traction control cable for the cruise box. SO if the donor car had traction control. you'll need to order the non TCS cable and swap it. I did...

I think there are a couple power wires, and it needs the speed sensor input, and tach input...then the wires to your turn signal lever for the cruise operations.

Sorry I cant be of more help... But its pretty simple sounding and I hope it works when I go to hook it up.

Check out the wiring diagrams for the cruise circuit too...they will tell you where all the wires need to go.

Ghetto,

What are the chances you can post a tech article when you get this done? I'll have to go from scratch on my car, it didn't have cruise control.

No problem...

However, if you use the 4th gen cruise unit, you are basically starting from scratch anyway. My car had cruise, but im not using any of it except for the indicator stalk with the cruise switches. You can use the one thats in the "HELP!" isle at autozone. The rest of the functions should work just like they did, you'll just have the cruise switches and a four contact wire coming from it.

Its a stand alone unit and only requires some general inputs from the PCM, and the brake switch and of course the control stick. But Ill definetly do alittle write up on it, because I have heard from plenty of folks that they've done it, but no real good info on making it work.

Best part about that 4th gen cruise box.....no vacuum lines. You can mount it anywhere you want, and hide it away. I have it tucked down below my fuse blocks where my battery used to sit.

Not sure when Im gonna get around to it..but when I do Ill take notes and post up!

In case you guys dont have it...here is the wiring diagram for the cruise set up on a 99 Camaro. Its probably the same for all the LS1 cars though. Its a scan of my prints so the quality is kinda shotty...but it'll get you started.

Don't know how far along you are on your project, but if you use the ETC Throttle body, pedal and TAC it sure makes crusie control easy. I have it on mine and once I got a working switch it works perfect. The electronic throttle really is sweet, Speatech set up my ECU and harness for it and included the 4 wires for the cruise. I used a turn stalk from an 80s GM product.

Yea, I probably could have made this easier if I bought the ETC peices, but I thought it would be too much work with the pedal and harness.

I'm not familiar at all with the 4th gen cruise unit, so I have some homework to do. Does it have a cable to connect to the throttle body?

Second how easy it was to use the ETC throttle body, pedal and TAC. Mine even bolted right in where my old cruise unit went!! And no brackets or cables to screw with.

Yeah but can you get a 90mm electronic throttle body?? I thought they were all smaller.

The electric TB definetly makes cruise easier...but since I had a complete donor 99...it just made sense to use what I already had. It should work just fine if its hooked up correctly.

a10beav: The unit is basically just a box with a harness and a cable coming out of it. As long as the cable is for a NON TCS car, it will hook right up to the TB on that side post that comes off the throttle blade cam. My throttle cable bracket had two spots. One for the throttle cable, and one for the cruise cable to snap into. The 99 that I got was a TCS car. So I just purchased the throttle cable and the cruise cable for a non-TCS car, and it all hooked up perfectly. Swapping the cables is cake.

what car are you swapping it too. I've put cruise on some car's if you using a newer gm car it's real easy. pretty much plug and play. you can use a cruise control box from another vehical also it doesn't have to be a f-body. I've used s-10 unit's with minor cable bracket modifactions and full size truck as well the wiring and plugs is the same on 98 and later models I can't speak of the earlier ones though

I'm putting a '02 Camaro LS1/A4 into my '69 Chevy C10 truck. I have the '02 cruise control unit and I can see where that plugs into the harness. I wasn't planning on swapping the steering column so I wanted to hook up a couple of switches to activate and control the cruise.
