To make 500rwhp with a 6.0 including stock rods and pistons is going to be harder than it looks on paper. You'll need to fly-cut most likely to gain enough compression to run the size cam properly that you'll need to make that kind of power. You'll need a great set of cylinder heads and a Fast intake, Holley Hi-ram, Edelbrock Pro Flo or a single plane like a Super Victor to make that kind of power.

I've know of quite a few stock short block LT1's that make in the 420-430 rwhp range with ported stock head castings, stock intake, and very streetable hydraulic cams. Seems like 500 from a H/C 6.0L shouldn't be hard considering much better heads available, 14 more cubic inches, and all the other Gen3 / Gen IV advancements.
Again, I brought this up more as a question than to start a LT1 vs. LS1 debate. If it ends up turning this thread into that I will delete the post.

Engine is 355ci, stock replacement internals. Heads havent even been gasket matched, valves are stock.
New numbers are 431.3rwhp 408.7lbfttq...

I think you took it as me bashing the LSx engines, but I was actually trying to acknowledge that they are superior in most ways. Heck.....there are stock / unported L92 heads that will bolt on the 6.0L and flow more than all but the best ported LT1 heads (stock castings or aftermarket).
As far as reasons people are abandoning the LT1's....they are many. First and foremost: The optispark. Then there is the relatively small aftermarket support/parts availability. Also, they are being dumped for the LSx because (like I was trying to say to begin with) the HP potential is just not as good from the LT1. Then there are plenty who go from LT1 to LS1 just because of the popularity thing.
Now....about your saying that as soon as I admit the truth to myself I'll thank you: 1. I never denied it to start with. 2. I actually own several LT1's AND several 5.3's and an LS2 with L92 heads.
For myself....the LT1 is a good "bang for the buck" because I'm not trying to make 430 rwhp.....or run 10 second 1/4's. I've got a 61 Bel Air with a small BBC for that. Sure it could be done with an LS powerplant, but the big block has been in it since before GM started designing the LS1. I have a 97 SS with CNC heads that I'm sure falls short of 430, but I'm confident it's over 390 and loads of fun. I've got a another set of CNC'd heads for a 95 ram air Formula that I'd also expect to be in the same range. Why am I building LT1's?? I am cheap....LT1's are cheap. I'll have less money in either of those whole cars than I would have in a swap to a stock LS1 engine......or than I'd have in buying a used 98+ f-body.

I'm sorry you misunderstood my intentions with my post above.
I've followed The Merv's builds for years and have seen that you helped him (and many many others) with great parts and proven results. I wasn't trying to take anything away from you (or from the LS1 family of engines.)

All I was trying to say is 430 rwhp with a 350" stock short block LT1 is not that hard.....and.....a good bit MORE than that is not that hard with a 6.0L short block. I wasn't trying to start a debate on which is better. All that boils down to is personal preference, opinion, and cubic dollars. LOL Also a lot of it comes down to what one has access to and knowledge of.
