No answre to my 68 Impala 496 swap question in this thread?
Anywhere somebody posted that he enlarged a 496 to 555cid, does anybody know something about it?
Also I have been told that the early 496 had forged crankshafts, I have bought a 2001´496 shortblock and if that rumor is the truth my engine should have the forged one, right?
I tried to send a PM to doorslammer as he seems to know a lot about that engine but it has been written that he is not a member of this forum???
If somebody have the e-mail address from him please come in touch by bow-tie@gmx.at
Thanks Hannes

Sorry man. The thread has actually been dead for a long time, and you'll notice the last page was all 'new' registrants coming here to give me a hard time.
I'm a low key member so I really didn't have anything towards your question. Sorry.

Thanks for the answer Durango,
did you realize the Corvette / Vortec 8100 project?
If you read my postings in the last time I try the same with a 68 Impala and need a lot of infos.
Take any experience I can get cause I will do the swap for sure.
Thanks Hannes

No, the project budget didn't allow for an 8100 swap. Instead, I found a Vortec 350, complete, for $100. About $500 worth of machine shop work, maybe another $500 in parts, and it'll be plenty of motor for the '74.
Maybe some day I can look back into an 8100 or 7400, but for right now it's a 350.

I am sorry that, I am convinced about the Corvette 496 EFI.
I dont accept what people say about that engine, every motor can be modified
to bring performance and if a 496cid not, which engine else?
That are the people, instead to tune up a new, technical developed, fuel injected engine, they prefer to use a engine from the 60 only as that is the way it have been always.
Thanks so far
Hannes

I agree with you, the modern motor is a great choice for many reasons. More efficient piston and ring pack design. The blocks are factory rollers, and are generally made with better materials.
The Vortec 350 that was chosen was a 1996 engine, so it still falls in the new technology category and will make a great platform for making 350 - 400 HP.

A 350 TPI?
If so we made many good experience with that engine. We even bolted a 400 shortblock under a 350 LT1
Very nice things.
Durango, did you ever hear that the early 496 Vortec had forged cranks?
My shortblock is a 2001 and would fall in that category.

No the Vortec 350s have a unique form of direct fuel injection. I don't recall what it's name is but it's not TBI, TPI, or even LT1. It's unique. Basically a truck, SUV, and van engine spanning from '96 - '99. The Vortec was the truck equivalent of the car LT1. The big difference is that the Vortec motors have the same engine design as the Gen1 blocks minus the roller lifter bores, one piece rear main seal provisions, and some bolt pattern differences with the timing cover.
GM dropped both the Vortec and LT1 engines when they released the LS small blocks.
I really do not know about the forged crank. I have very limited knowledge of big blocks in general let alone the later Gen big blocks.
The Gen1 400 I have in my garage is converted to factory roller, and has the LT1 heads and intake.
Still a few details left so I won't swap it in for at least another year.
