S10 Swap Using Mustang headers Question

OK, im building a 96 S10 with an LQ9 408/T56 and want to put some long tube 1 3/4 headers in it, but nobody makes them, and custom headers are way out of the budget.
But i remember reading somewhere a few years ago when i first started to research the LS1 swap into an S10 that somebody had taken a set of 87-93 mustang fox body headers, cut the ford flange off and with just some minor tweaking welded on an LS1 flange and they fit pretty well, but now i cant seem to find any of that info and just wanted to see if anybody has actually done this and if so how did it work out?
If im way off base with this let me know that too. My only other choice is going to be buying a weld your own set and building my own, because the samdersons just wont allow the 408 to breath up top.

It can be done, the port spacing is the same but it is some work. I was going to use some shorty Ford headers that would have fit perfectly but my exhaust guy said that as soon as you cut the Ford flanges off the tubes would go everyway but where you need them. Plus he would have to have made the tubes round again at the exhuast ports since the Fords were a kind of square oval shape, and his machine would not go down that small. Maybe it would be a bunch easier with long tubes or if you could do it yourself with a Sawzall and big hammer.

yeah i know about the samdersons, but they are only 1.5 in primarys and no where hear enough for a 408.
Ive looked at some Ls1 swap headers for the 1st gen camaro, and they look pretty close, i think the hooker super comps for a 93 mustang 302 are the best ones ive seen, but it is alot of work to redo the tubes and weld on a new flange.

I did a set of the fox longtubes for my old rx7 there should be a post on here with more info. It is not much trouble at all, just have to expand the tubes back out to round again, slip them into the flanges, and weld up on the inside.

So you buy Mustang 302 full tube headers and flanges for the LSX head. The cut the Ford flange off and put the primaries of the Ford headers in the LSX flange. Is that all I would need to do and how hard would it be to make the primiaries match up to the LSX flange? Thanks for the info you have to realize that this isn't something that will be covered in Hot Rod. If you can post pictures that would be AWESOME!!!!!

It is BBK part #15490 ceramic coated and #1594 non-coated chrome. You want them for 87-93 5.0 Mustangs with 1 3/4" primaries.
Check corral.net for cheap used sets. I got mine for $200 shipped from there.
Part # on the flanges is 12480130 at gmpartsdirect.com.
It is VERY easy. Cut the Ford flanges off right at the tube, beat the primary tubes back to round, slide the LS1 flanges on the tubes about 3/4 of the way and weld the inside of the flange to the tube. Clean up the weld and off you go!
Good luck!
