Default What code reader/diagnostic tool or software to buy?

What do you guys think the best code reader is for our conversion applications? I dont know alot about the subject personally but I've been looking into it lately. If I purchase a generic scan tool what kind of detailed info will I get?? Will I see what the PCM sees. etc? Whats the deal with Laptop based programs such as Autotap and LS1edit, or EFI live? If I decide to go the laptop route what do I need? Does LS1edit work as a scan tool as well?

BTW, what are some price figures on this stuff?

LS1 edit is programming only. NO SCAN. I think EASE is the best scanner because it is licensed by GM. I do not own any yet so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But, I have done some homework and the best place to look is here under the PCM section. Laptop is the only way to go. Again my opinion, but you can store much more data than with say a palm pilot version. Buying EASE will also let me look at all my OBDII GM vehicles. I have a 2001 Silverado as well. Actually, the personal use EASE lets you look at 30 different vehicles. Buying generic doesn't save you much money so why bother.

Ease is $350. Autotap and EFILive comes to around the same. LS1 Edit is $550.

so i should probably look at picking up a used laptop for about 300, Ease for about 350, and LS1edit if I need it. Guess my next couple of paychecks are spoken for.
