How about a $600 S400 turbo from Dave @ Majestic, to see how much the 5.3 will take....?

They will take alot, we have pushed one to over 600hp at the rear wheels.(Stock 5.3 with z06 cam and aftermarket springs,plus the obvious Turbo)

See the March HotRod for the DailyDriver winner.(Very budget build)

that must be a "California budget". I'm looking at a "fun car" for 10K. (and a $600.00 turbo might just fit).

I haven't seen any Vegas with an LSX motor yet.

326 actually

They make 300-310 flywheel stock. So based on a concervative conversion factor of 20% that's 300*.8= 240 rwhp

Add a cam +60
head work +15
bump compression +10
headers & exhaust +15

Do pulleys or a electric water pump for a few more.

That's good for about 100 hp over stock or about 340 rwhp.

Another way (ricer some may argue) is to calculate the potential hp is most cars here make a dynojet rwhp of about 75 hp/liter

5.7 = 5.7*75=427.5 hp
6.0 = 6.0*75 = 450 hp
6.2 = 6.2*75 = 465 hp

so if you can optimze a 5.3 equivalently you should get 397hp. Given the disadvantage of the smaller bore I think 375 NA might be possible.

And raise ya a......well I can`t think of anything, I think LSx`s have been swapped into everything with wheels, a prop, and some stuff that does not even exist yet.

Im jumping on the 5.3/zo6 cam/turbo ship as thats what i want to do.

As for cars, i say a nice gbody would be perfect. Can be had for cheap(seen a clean malibu go for 500 as a roller) plenty of parts available and the engine bay is huge.

I'd love to see an article on a 5.3 buildup in a fisrst gen. I have just finished (almost) the sheet metal work on my second fisrt gen car. Thinking ahead to the power plant. Defineately want a T56 but haven't decided on an engine. My 2004 GMC has a 5.3. It runs great but I want more.

An LS2 built is out of the question at 12 - 15k just for the engine. I'm wondering about an LQ4 stroker (more budget minded). Guessing $6 - 8K. Would love to see something done with a 5.3 to raise the power level. I haven't found many articles on building 5.3's

Default 67-72 Chevrolet....

Truck or Blazer. 5.3l with automatic would make a good parts hauler and get good MPG.

Just my .02

FYI I bought a 2004 LQ4 long block with a spun main bearing for a $100 core from my local Chevrolet Dealer.It is at my machine shop now.Hope to have $4-6k into the swap and $10-12 into the car.

Nice looking truck!

5.3s are a bargain. I guess their only downside is the HP limit compared to larger engines. I haven't seen any builds of 5.3s. Would like to see some. I will probably opt for an LQ4 build for my 67 Camaro but would still like to see more on the 5.3.

I have read that if you put ls1 rods and pistons in a 5.3 it pretty much becomes a 5.7. Not real sure how well this works but it could be a way to get a cheep ls1 as long as you use ls1 heads and cam.

I have thought about this quite a few times for a new motor in my car. But i would be reusing a lot of my parts so i would already have a lot of the expensive stuff.

Synergy has taken their 5.3 to just shy of 800HP I think it was (18psi TT) on the owners truck and thats thru the 480LE Tranny.

Stock block with 6.0 Heads and a Cam if I recall correctly. (search will likely turn up more details than my memory)

These 5.3's seems to be able to make plenty of power with a little FI helping out.

It is a little more involved than just swapping pistons and rods. You have to bore and hone the block in order to get the same displacement. When you bore the block to 3.898 or 3.905 you will get an iron version of the LS1.
