ls1 or lQ9 lookin to put one in a 1980 t/a i just started finding a very little about the lQ9 can someone direct me to somewhere i can find out a bunch of info about the lQ9 i.e. what it came in and what years do i want? and anything else would be great! and can i use the computer and harness out of the truck ,for high performance like reflash it?
I always liked the wikipedia list of gm vortec engines.
It will tell you what it came in....

Do a search for lq9 lots of posts about them...That's what I did...
Basically came in 3/4 ton/bigger trucks/vans/suv's. Some of the trks are actually lq4's. Which is the same with alittle less compression. mine came from an 03 2500HD van. You can use the computer/harness check w/ speartech for all that stuff. They are a sponsor here on ls1tech. Lots of info here on this site...

Perhaps a little premature but check out www.car-part.com . It searches a plethora of junkyards across the U.S. You can find some great deals on engines on there with a little bit of effort.
As far as info goes, definitely keep up with this website and I've found that wikipedia is indeed a helpful and (usually) reliable source.

The Vortec HO 6000 or VortecMAX, technically the LQ9, is a special high-output version of the Vortec 6000 V8 truck engine originally designed for Cadillac. This engine was introduced in other truck lines as VortecMAX for 2006. It features high-compression (10:1) flat-top pistons for an extra 10 hp and 10 ft·lb, bringing output to 345 hp (257 kW) and 380 ft·lb (515 N·m). LQ9s are built only in Romulus, Michigan.

LQ4s are built in Romulus, Michigan and Silao, Mexico.

Since the blocks are the same and the heads are interchangeable, (unless someone knows something that I don't), the only way is to look at the pistons.
From Memory:
Compression is the only difference. LQ4 is 9.4; LQ9 is 10.1
The 01-04 LQ4's use the same cam as the 02-03 LQ9
The oil pans and front accessories are the same.
If it's a 6 liter with Iron heads, it's an 99-2000 LQ4
If it has a cable throttle body, it's probably an LQ4
Don't know much else, sorry.
