Am leaning heavily toward cutting crossmember, forming 3 X 1/4" plate and welding it back up. Before I do thought I would check with the existing experts. I could pull the pan and get it boxed. My thoughts (as weak as they may be) is that the 1/4" plate would more than make up for the missing crossmember and it should still be stiff enough. Your guys thoughts??

I cut and boxed my crossmember, took a good day to do it. I also had to cut and box a small place at AC compressor. Compressor cleared but couldn't get AC lines on back of compressor. Oil pan would be a lot easier just needed a challenge. I had a bare block and extra oil pan, made taking in and out a lot easier by myself.

I went with boxing the crossmember since my goal was to get the LS1 as far back and as low as possible for weight distribution. Once I did that there was no need to modify the oil pan but I had to either mount the Alternator and AC up high or notch the crossmember. I choose to notch the crossmember to keep the brackets stock LS1. I went with 1/8" plate for the boxing plates because that was closest to the original crossmember thickness. Picture is before final welding.
