i was told by a junk yard that a 4l60 that was bolted to a 3.8 wont work on an ls1????? why????

 

I believe it will work. you either have to change the bellhousing or change the tailshaft end. one or the other

 

if I'm not mistaking the 3.8 is a 60 degree motor which has a differnt bolt patter and to my knowledge the 4l60e has a as cast bellhousing. at lest all the ones I've had did and I still got a few.

 

The 3.8 is a 90° engine, it is based on the old Buick going back to the 1960's. Where did the 4L60 come from? The only car that I can think of that had the 3.8 and a 4L60E is the last years of the f-body. There were 4 sp autos behind the 3.8 in earlier cars but they were 200 4R.

 

Talking about the 4L60, what is the best aftermarket shifter for this trany??

As was stated above the only cars that I know of that had a 3.8L and 4l60e are the 4th gen f-bodies. Now the 3.8l`s in those are the 2nd generation 3.8L`s. When GM cast the second gen 3.8l motors they used the 60degree bellhousing pattern even though the 3.8`s are 90 deg motors. So the trans will not physically bolt up(back then the 4l60e trans bellhousing was an integral part of the case, not removeable like the newer LSx style 60e`s).

I believe he menas 4l60e. a 4l60 is a 700r4, they changed the designation of the 700r4 in the early 90`s and did not change anything with the actual trans, it was still not computer controlled. And to my knowledge the 4l60/700r4 was never put behind a 3.8L, back then they ran the 2004r behind all the buick 3.8`s.

Later in the 90`s (93-94 IIRC) they added electronics to the 4l60 and it became the 4l60e which was used behind the second generation of 3.8`s because the 200r4 had been discontinued.

Therefore if it was behind a 3.8l he must mean a 60e

 

Yup, the 4L60-E works with the LS1 but he didn't say what the LS1 came out of.
The ECM runs the transmission and the engine.
How was the ECM programmed? For manual or automatic?
I'm running a 4L65-e with my LS1 but it was already programmed to mate with an automatic.

By the way, you can plug a laptop into the ECM and change all sorts of transmission parameters. Shift points, Flare, firmness of the shift, rpm limiter, etc....
