Wow, so AA does sell headers for late gen motors? Last time I called them they told me they had no solution for these engines. I figured something would fit, but really didn't want to play the trial fit game with pricey headers. Alternative is I could always fab some, but I'm getting lazy in my old age I've heard hookers would fit too, so may just go that route. I'll look into these slik fits though. Thanks.

With gas at $3.50 and with my jeep getting 11 MPG before the swap, 18 MPG after, it came out to about 90,000 miles before I started saving money from the swap (only in terms of gas that is). I also calculated the cost of my swap at $7,000.

Just curious
Haha... Well I dont remember saying that you will save enough money on gas to "re-coup" the cost of the swap. I certainly wouldnt do a swap like this specifically to save on MPG. I was just stating that you could realistically see an increase in MPG, on a properly set up rig, over the stock 4.0.

However...since you want math. Lets see. $3.50 a gallon, x cost of LS1 or 5.3 - coolness factor and added performance and satisfaction of another goofey project completed...... Ide say it would pay itself off in about......4.3 minutes haha.

I LOVE the 4.0. Im actually pretty disappointed that they ditched it. I can kind of see why and all.... I just love those motors. I love the 4.0 for the same reason I love the LS1. They are for the most part simple. And they do their job quite well. However...given the opportunity to swap in an LS1 into my XJ....no question. Ide do it. And I wouldnt spend 7k in the process either. MAYBE 5k all said and done. LS1s are becoming fairly cheap these days. And donor cars will give you more bang for you buck than a pull out mainly because you can not only use a bunch of stuff off it, but you can re-coupe some of your cost by selling off the parts. If youre smart about it, and do some shopping, you can find some really good deals.

J.

P.S. TomH...thats a pretty cool rig you have goin there. Good luck with it!! One of these days Ill get another Jeep project going. Im about to sell my 94..just picked up an 01. And I need to do my 2nd LS1 swap into the 86 TA I got...to replace my black one Soooo many projects...soooooooo little time.

Thanks. It's a 6.0L so I'm not expecting great mileage. I put the GMPP Hot Cam in it and had Jim's Perf. do the mods to the PCM to open it up. Should be rolling by this summer. I had been testing the fuel system with the coil packs unplugged and had run the oil pressure up as well, later I had it all connected and accidentally started it. (It has an RFID keyless starting system, but I have regular toggle switches during the buildup and the start switch was already on when I turned on the ignition circuit. I now have a better appreciation for the park/neutral safety switches that were in place.) It fired immediately and started to dump trans fluid, as I don't have the radiator or trans cooling lines connected.

Dont ya love that? I just had that recently happen to my XJ.... I was doing the poor mans trans flush (disconnecting pressure line to trans cooler, running while pouring in fresh fluid). Well, I didnt even know I had a remote starter. It has an aftermarket alarm, that I have one remote for, and no instructions. I had the batt. disconnected because I was installing cruise control earlier.

As soon as I slapped the battery cable back on, damn thing fired and started blowing trans fluid all over the garage. Had NO idea how to shut the car off...panicked. Of course pulling the batt. cable wont do it. Key was in my pocket, but I tried that anyway. Nothing. Finally realized you have to hit the brake pedal, and it will shut down. My next step was changing my underwear. haha.

Im hoping to have my 86 up and running in a few weeks AFTER the weather breaks and it gets a tad warmer...I gotta work outside again. Thats full strip down, and fully built/swapped. Should be fun!

Ha.. If only the motor was the only big money item Everyone sets out to spend as little as possible when they start a project like these. I know I did. All the little stuff adds up. Of course, I could have cut a lot of corners and saved some cash, but figured do it now or do it later..

I'm headed out to the garage now to install the Novak TC shifter. Another expense I could have avoided, but I just hated the stock POS mushy TJ z-gate style shifter.

Tomorrow's plan is to slap the HPt cable on it and perform a full SD tune. It runs surprisingly well as is though..

Oh, and I can relate to the tranny fluid situation. I overlooked hooking the lines up when I did my first start up test. Gotta love kitty litter

I am plugging a LS1 in my CJ7. I have the heads ported, Ti retainers etc, and have a healthy cam. I was worried at first about the running the larger cam due to the lack of torque down low. But, I run 40's on D60's with 5.38's, NV4500 wide ratio, and an Atlas 6:1. I will be 204:1 in low/low.

I got a set of those headers from AA, I am sending them back. The primaries are dinky, and the merge in the collector sucks. I would like to find some 1 3/4" shortys, but it is proving to be impossible. May have to make my own.

If you want low-end torque, stick with the "dinky primaries."

Good luck.

dumb question

How do you adapt the 4l60e to a nonGM transfer case(NP231)

I have a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 that I'd love to put a GM 6.0 and 4l60e into along with the GM PCM but I question how to adapt the trans to the transfer case.

Thanks.

That's about the time I would put in a call to AA or Novak. (I'm guessing that they're both in the "been there, done that.." camp.)

Good luck!

Ghettocruiser do you mate the 231 up to the 4L60E? or do you usually swap in an older transfercase? or do you go atlas?

You can go either route really.. Right now I'm using a 4L60E with a np231 behind it using an adapter from AA (Novak also sells em). This is only temp until I switch out the 231 for an Atla$
