No lack of low end. Never use first around town. In low range it will idle around in first gear. Have to keep your foot on the brake.
On the street it will pull cleanly from 10-15 mph in fourth gear.
I'm doing a 99 Wrangler with and 2000 LS1 and 4L60E with 3:73 gears. It should really be quick.
The LS1 seems to get pretty good MPG, and if you gear the jeep, you can squeeze a couple more out of it. I just did 4.56s and 35s on a buddies TJ, and his MPG went from 16 (stock) to a solid 18-19.
MPG definitly wouldnt stop me from dropping an LS1 into my XJ... Im actually looking for an excuse to keep my 94 2-door and drop an LS or a 5.3 into it. Gotta see what money looks like this spring.

My 11.5 second 3rd gen pulls high 20s on the highway and around 20 average. So Im fairly convinced they can be pretty efficient. Its all in the set up. Everything has to work together and if it does, you should be able to come up with a good comprise between economy and performance for what you want to do with the rig.

Just curious
They are the Advance Adapter Slik Fit block hugger headers. I added 3-Bolt flanges and then had them ceramic coated at Jet-Hot.

It's about 85% complete and almost ready to go-kart. Next week I have to take it to the BMV to plate it so that I can call it a Jeep. Fired the motor by accident (kinda) earlier this week. Sounds good with the GMPP "Hot Cam," but I need to finish the plumbing before letting it run.
