Default Jeep swappers

For anyone who swapped an LS in a jeep, did you feel that the LS lacked the low end grunt you need on the trails? Im trying to find out if anew cam would be neede/ worth it
Thanks

I did a cam swap on mine, but no I don't think it's "needed". Especially on the trails where it's mostly gearing anyway. I haven't had mine on the trails yet since the swap, but I'll see how it performs very shortly.

Agreed. A lot depends on your Tcase & diff gearing. What trans are you looking at running?

Brandon, me or the OP? I'm running a stock 4L60E behind a H/C 5.3L.

Have you had the beast out yet?

I was thinkin a 3500 would be a good compromise(with the t-case from the S10)
Nothing is set in stone yet though, so I'm open to suggestions.

If you jeep is properly set up with gearing for tire size, and you have a good t-case...you will not be short of torque with any of the LS motors.

Replace the cam if you want, but I dont think its needed.

Mine has 4.56 gears, so tons of grunt. I haven't had to use 4 low yet. Pretty sure I could pull a wheelie if my axle could take it .

80 CJ7, 5.3L, 4L60E, 35" MTR's, Dana 300 w/ LoMax 4:1, 3.54's(soon to be 4.11's). The 3.54s are too tall, seems to barely be idleing at speed, I think with the 4.11's its going to be just right. The 4:1 Tcase provides more than enough grunt, you could climb a wall with this thing. No need to fool with a cam.

Default LS Jeep

I have a 4.8 in a 98 Wrangler with a AX15 5 speed. 4:10 gears since it was a 2.5 4 cylinder. 31 x 10.50 tires.

No lack of low end. Never use first around town. In low range it will idle around in first gear. Have to keep your foot on the brake.

On the street it will pull cleanly from 10-15 mph in fourth gear.

I'm doing a 99 Wrangler with and 2000 LS1 and 4L60E with 3:73 gears. It should really be quick.

I would expect a properly geared jeep with an LS1 to get good MPG. Maybe better than stock.... A stock 4.0 jeep with NO mods gets around 17-18 average. Topping out in the low 20's on the highway. No matter how many claims you hear of people doing better...thats the norm for conservative driving.

The LS1 seems to get pretty good MPG, and if you gear the jeep, you can squeeze a couple more out of it. I just did 4.56s and 35s on a buddies TJ, and his MPG went from 16 (stock) to a solid 18-19.

MPG definitly wouldnt stop me from dropping an LS1 into my XJ... Im actually looking for an excuse to keep my 94 2-door and drop an LS or a 5.3 into it. Gotta see what money looks like this spring.

Big tires, big axles, big lifts, and the added weight of cages / body armor will bring the suck to fuel economy. I wouldn't try to justify an LSx swap by fuel savings.

You could justify the swap in MPG savings, but you'd have to ignore the $5000+ that it costs to do it

Agreed... However not everyone does big axles, big lifts, and cages. My XJ is at 5" with 33" M/Ts. Rear XJ Dana 44, and high pinion Dana 30 for the front. Hardly what Ide consider "big" these days. I re-geared to 4.56 and I LOVE the combo. With my 200k+ mile 4.0 I get about 15 on average. Im willing to bet that Ide get a good bit better if I swapped in a nice 5.3 or LS1... Even over a fresh 4.0.

My 11.5 second 3rd gen pulls high 20s on the highway and around 20 average. So Im fairly convinced they can be pretty efficient. Its all in the set up. Everything has to work together and if it does, you should be able to come up with a good comprise between economy and performance for what you want to do with the rig.

Sooooooooo, assuming gas at $3.50/gal, how many miles will it take to re-coup the cost of the swap? (No need for a discounted cash flow / NPV calc, just the simple math answer will do.)

Just curious

Thanks.

They are the Advance Adapter Slik Fit block hugger headers. I added 3-Bolt flanges and then had them ceramic coated at Jet-Hot.

Additional random pix of the build http://www.hachiya.us/Jeep/WTF-J%20Update/index.htm

It's about 85% complete and almost ready to go-kart. Next week I have to take it to the BMV to plate it so that I can call it a Jeep. Fired the motor by accident (kinda) earlier this week. Sounds good with the GMPP "Hot Cam," but I need to finish the plumbing before letting it run.
