Default New from Winnipeg Canada

My name is Jean-Marc, my new project is to plant a LS engine out of a 2002 silverado into my 55 GMC truck. Here is a couple question, I have a 71 Firebird front clip on the truck, am'I going to run into clearance issues with the oil pan. I saw on ebay engine mount conversion kit to fit the SB cross member that move the engine back 1" and an other kit that doesn't, which one sould i used? Can a 700R4 fit the LS engine? Any tips welcome
Thanks, JM

Hi Jean-Marc, nice looking truck you have there. I am in Brandon so nice to see another manitoba guy on here. Anyhow the problem you will have is the pan hanging down to low. It will depend how high you can have the motor sit in the truck body you might be able to get away with it. But if you use bought mount they will likely put the motor low enough that oil pan to ground clearance will be a problem.

A 700r4 will bolt up not sure how you would control the kickdown though.

HI, i'm actualy in Fannystelle it's on number 2 hyw south of Elie. This is my first swap with fuel injection, i usualy stick to original resto. I have a 305 sb in it now and there is lots of clearance with ground, my consern was more with the crossmember.

Here it is I finaly got the engine/tranny home, after a 6 month wait. (see attached pics) For 500$ I got a 5.3 vortec out of a wrecked 2002 Silverado with approximately 85000 kms on it. Came from a left over project at my work place. Was originaly 4X4 now has a 4l60E from a 2WD on it but I'm not sure what it came out off. Here is the tranny number, 4CHD104J, if someone can help ID this tranny please. Who ever pulled the engine out of the truck tried to save the wiring but didn't know what they were doing so I have a big mess to sort out. Nothing is marked and some of it has been cut. The plan is to try to get it running using the original wiring fist and then clean up what i don't need.

Jean-Marc

Your configuration should be easy to mount that engine in, The second gen f bodies have alot of clearance for the oil pan and you should be fine with a f body unit. I would use these plates first and see how it all fits

Here is my first attempt at mounting the 5.3 in my 71 Firebird cliped 55 GMC truck. I will put the cab back on to see how clearance i have with the floor and firewall but for now i just wanted to see how it looks in the frame rail. My first concern it seems to sit very low. Oil pan is about 3 inches below crossmember. Exhaust are touching frame at the back and the heater outlet of the waterpump are very close to the upper control arm. Engine mount not done yet. Is there an other manifold i could use that would give me better clearence with the frame or do i have to go with headders.

I have a set of LS2 manis that you can try and see if they will help you. They don't go down as far and exit in a different area of the log.

You may want to switch to the fbody oil pan to reduce the risk of pan damage.
