There is a plug that only has 1 wire in it - that's what goes in there

it is your exciter wire for the regulator.

What year wiring harness/pcm are you using? Still running EFI or going carbed?

Now I was under the impression that prior to that connector is the voltage regulator, located inside the alternator, and then from there it went to the fuse box to be divided and ran throughout the vehicle. I came to that conclusion as the only other wire that I have ran on the alternator is the feed line from the battery. This assumption was derived from installing a new alternator on my 3.4L camaro just recently. Which makes sense as ZZP sells a piece inbetween the connector on the alternator and the connector you plug into it to fake the alternator's regulator out to give you another volt coming out on that line. I hope that helps.

If need be I can take a picture or 2 tomorrow after work of my 3.4's alternator as it sits on top and is easily viewable, and I can trace that wire to the main fuse block to verify my assumption.

get you a plug to fit it (GM sells it for a pretty penny if you need a new one) and just use the second pin from the left in that pic. It needs a switched 12 volt signal with a 470ohm resistior wired inline so the alternator doesnt get the full 12 volts (or it will burn up after a short time). Then attach a wire from the stud on the back of the alternator to your battery.

Heres a pic of mine.....

"Switched" 12V signal... what would I wire this wire to, to feed it power?

Switched 12v would be any wire that has 12v to it in the start and run positions. IE your old coil wire, the power supply for the fuel injectors, etc.

stop by your local salvage yard and look under any newer GM car and the alternator is bound to have that plug. Im sure you can get it for less than $5 if not free.

What ever you do dont feed 12v straight to the alt.Ideally if yours is a 99+ ls1, hook the wire to the PCM. You can look up the pin number on the FAQ stickies.

Otherwise have a resistor or BATT light inline between the 12V source and the alt

I just bought a '98 camaro, and have fried 2 voltage regulators this past week. Voltage shoots up to 16-18v, and then drops to 12v after a couple minutes, and quits charging. The alternator in the car has the plug with 4 wires coming out, and only 1 is used. That wire has been cut and spliced back together by the previous owner. So should I hook up a 500ohm resistor in line, and that will fix my problem?

Solder a wire to the correct "pin" as indicated and add a 10 cent resistor as discribed-no need for a expensive plug.
