Default Alt & AC brackets

I just dropped my LS1/T56(fbody) in my 73 camaro and was planning to use the stock alt&ac by notching the frame like Hotchkis did on their 71 camaro. However,in hopes of optimizing handling,I set my engine about 3" back and 3" down from where Hotchkis did.

I need to know how I can use the stock alt&ac compressor up high,is that where the vette has them?I know that if I use vette brackets I will have to change my crank pulley, but I would rather use OEM brackets and parts where possible.
Any help will be appreciated.Thanks.

You can use the Vette setup to get the alt and P.S. mounted high, but ALL LS1 style engines put the A/C compressor in the same place; low on the passenger side. JohnB did a custom high mount A/C compressor, and I think he can reproduce these. You check out his Monte pics and see if that setup will work for you.

On the last 2 conversions we did here using A/C, we used a plasma cutter to notch the frame, and then filled the "hole" with new steel. It worked out nicely.

Thanks for the reply John.
I had planned to notch the frame but with the motor back and down so far,the notch would be into my mower a-arm bolt hole.It also looks like the compressor would hit or come very close to my steering linkage.I guess I should have gone with an aftermarket subframe.

I put my LS1 with the bottom of the oil pan about 3/16" above the bottom of the crossmember. I would think yours couldn't be much lower without ground clearance problems. While my AC compressor is very close to the lower control arm I got creative with the filler plate to make it clear. The only real problem was the AC mount lower bolt boss and clearance to get the bolt in place with the motor in the car. You may have a problem is if your LS1 is going to be further back than mine but I doubt that since I couldn't go much further without having to sit in the back seat to shift the T56. Now that this is done I do have two problems. I need to come up with and adapter for the compressor that turns the lines 90 degrees up since there is minimal clearance between the notch and the compressor. This is due to the motor mount being right at the back of the compressor and I couldn't cut much more. I'm also concerned about the variable displacement LS1 AC compressor working properly with my factory AC.

Take a look at the pics on my site to see if they help. 2nd Gen LS1/T56 Swap If you want more info send me a email with specific questions and I'll try and get an answer or picture for you.

Vintage air sells a GM compressor adapter that gives you straight #8 and #10 threads. I used this and then used a 90 degree and 135 degree connectors to fit my application.
