cracked transmission mount on block

I picked up an aluminum 5.3L today.

I got it home and started taking bolts out of to mount it on an engine stand and found the crack in the attached picture. The crack isn't all the way through, and a bolt will thread through it easily. It's got a warranty, so I don't think the junkyard would have a problem with me taking it back. The block has 19K miles on it.

So this isn't something that's repairable, or is just going to eventually break off?

It is repairable, very much so, but I would try to take it back first. If they wont take it back, then yeah, have it tig welded and make them pay for it.

Since it only has 19K, I would have it welded and let them pay for it, unless they have another low mileage motor.

Well, after having a night to think about this, it would be nice to keep this block due to the mileage.

However, the block obviously took a strong hit at some point. How do I get some level of assurance that there are no other cracks waiting for me? I imagine it's going to require a trip to a machine shop?

you just need to take the motor to a tig welder. nothing else needs to be done. no machine shop, no doctors or lawyers.
BUT..... i would take the motor back.

its prolly nothing. either a real hard side imapact that dislodged the tranny, or the junkyard man had his impact on the wrong way when he went to remove the tranny bolts, or a combination of the two.
ahah.

id settle up at the boneyard for a refund. most places can source motors with a given milage from anywhere if they have a nice parts system.
