Thumbs up Taking a stab at an LS engine in my '99 Sonoma

CHECK POST # 6 FOR PARTS NEEDED.

Well, I got this '99 GMC Sonoma from my cousin for $0.00. So, I decided to play around with my fabricating. So, I sold off some of the v-6 parts for $700.00. Yup, I'm now + $700.00 so far. LOL

I went out and bought an 80k mile 5.3 out of a 2003 Tahoe. It came with the intake, throttle body, oil pan, full long block, and electronics. With the coils. No harness. But I only paid $200.00. hehe So now I'm only + $500.00.

OK, so Thursday, I decided to pull the stock 4.3 engine. Was going to "pull" it. But decided that taking off the cab was faster, and was able to aid me in dropping in and pulling out the moch up block. So, here are some pics of the "fun".

Cab off, engine out.

Checking out the frame where I have to cut the frame for oil pan clearance. And cleaning the frame for measurements and cutting.

City Goats' old block and my truck oil pan ready to bolt up. With 2.8 S-10 mounts and new LS S-10 mounting plate kits.

IN!

Clearance with engine in place. Truck intake for now with dead 241's.

Cab back on, and it looks right at home.

Need to take out the A/C half of the HV/AC box and remake part of it to clear the coil packs and valve covers.

Underside clearance. Need to make a skid plate to make sure the oil pan doesn't take a hit.

Not too much clearance for headers. But we'll see what Kooks comes up with soon.

Next, CTS-V Brembo calipers on all four corners with Vette Z-51 rotors up front and SS Camaro rear rotors.

yeah cool project... especially the fact that you're making money on it... but not for long! kidding!!! that's neat that the only thing you'll have to pour into the truck is lots of time.

Things are going well. It's nice to be an auto tech, and have all the tools and lifts avalibile I need.

I am looking to have about $5k to $6k into it when I am done. That includes all the fab work, engine costs and mods, brake system, interior swap, and body work.

I sold the radiator (going with aluminum) , fan, shroud, air box, some minor odds and ends. Still have the whole engine, the engine harness, all sensors but the MAF (got water in it), distrobutor, front accessory drive setup with pumps and pullies, intake to oil pan.

Need something? Looking to make the fund a little bigger. LOL

I'd like to add that I still need some parts. List below.

Need Corvette A/C compressor and braket. With bolts if can.

Need a 2000 + F-body engine harness for an A-4 trans. Would like to have no EGR. But will deal with it if I can get a harness soon. No AIR system.

If close enough, would like to buy a low mile 4L60E trans from an LS equiped car or truck.

Need a Corvette front belt drive system with balancer pully, alternator, power steering pump, idler and tensioner pullies, brakets and bolts. (might buy brand new if I have to)

I also am looking for a complete charcole grey interior swap. And a body harness from an all power extended cab 2 wd truck.

PM me if anybody has anything listed above.

To get more ground clearance for your pan you can do what i did. I cut a 1" out of the bottom of pan and oil pickup to keep the pan same height as bottom off cross member. The Alum.stick works good on cast alum.I,ll post pics tomorrow if interested. I,m also working on fitting a set off longtube headers.I have a set of ford 351m headers they seem to hug the block well and the tubes line up well, just need to change the flanges. In the mustang ls1 conversions there also using modified ford headers too.The non coated ford headers are $135 and the ls1 flanges are $50 ,alot cheeper then the kooks.

Really, I thought they had the same size sump. I'll have to look into that one. Thanks for that info.

BTW, got the PM. Thanks, and we'll be talking soon.

In stead of the vette drive assembly you could use this setup....

We sell the bracket and alternator with tensioner for 400.00, it is used with stock f body accessories.

Also the lh8 pan works pretty well, in my application I sit higher due to it being a two wheel drive truck.....

Just wanted to bump this thread up. Been doing work, but it's been slow. Found out through further research, I have a 4.8 engine. Not a 5.3. So I took the engine apart and removed the 4.8 specific parts. I kept the connecting rods due to being low mile and in great shape. Then had some low mile stock LS-6 pistons pressed on and the block bored for an iron 5.7. Also mirco polished a used crank I had laying around. So the shortblock is almost complete. But the top end is next with a slightly higher cam than the LS-6 cam.

I have also been doing alot of parts rounding up. I almost have completed the Vette accessory drive setup. All I need now is GM bolts to attach them, some minor P/S parts, and a main belt tensioner. SO getting close.

I have also made some head way on my CTS-v Brembo brakes. It's actually working out very well for the fronts so far. But I had to do some heavy cutting and drill a couple holes to mount the calipers. I have some pics below. I took the stock rotors and machined them down to basically hubs. Then I added the longer 4wd studs to be able to use hat style rotors. And I found that C-6 Z-51 brake rotors fit extreamly well. Even helped move the caliper outword for more clearance for the a arms and spindles. Check out the photos I have so far. I'll have some with them on the truck when it warms up and I can get back outside and work on the truck again.

FYI, those are 13.36" rotors. Will need 17" wheels to clear them.

I always thought the 4.8 rods were longer because of the shorter crank.... Am I crazy?

edit-

4.8 stroke: 3.27
4.8 rod : 6.276
4.8 deck height: 9.240

5.3 stroke:3.62
5.3 rod: 6.098
5.3 deck height: 9.240

Wont the deck height be too high if you put the ls6 pistons on those rods?

Im looking at one just like the one posted. Do you guys tarp the motors or anything? Im assuming the motors just run single phase 220v right?

I'll double check the rod lenghts. But the casting #'s on the rods are the same as a '99 LS-1 out of a Camaro. Which is where I got the block and pistons from.

As far as the lift. It works great in temps above 40*. But you have to keep the lift pump covered to make sure nothing gets in it when not using it. It's a spare lift at the shop I work at.

why do you want an f-body harness and trans?

my buddy an i just did his 99 sanoma with a 5.3 and the 4.3 trans works fine. plus if you use the truck harness its a little easier to make you stock gauges work. just repin an plug it in basically.
