Default Newbie question on 6.0 truck engine

I am looking to put a 6.0 truck engine in my 67 chevelle and I was wondering if there are any year of truck engines to stay away from. I would like to keep the fuel injection and just install a cam in the engine. I will mostly be racing the car but I wanted to try a stock 6.0 with my th400. Thanks for the help

You should stay away from the 99-00 6.0L motors, as they have iron heads which do not flow as well and are prone to cracking.

The LQ9 motors have a little more compression 10.0 to 1 instead of 9.4 like the LQ4.

^^ pretty much sums it up.. Keep in mind in 2003 they started drive by wire throttle bodies.. so if you get a pull out prepare to find a tb with sensors.

Don't some of the 6.0's have 4L80E's behind them. If your keeping the fuel injection you might as well keep the OD too, PCM has to be tuned for the cam, might as well tune the trans at the same time and save gas on the drive home from the track thats my .02

Thanks for the replys. I would like to keep the 4l80e if I can find one cheap enough. I wasnt sure if the newer engines had anything inside them that shuts down cylinders or not or if that is all done electronically .

Also remember that there are two kinds of 6.0L truck engines. The LQ4 (low compresion) and LQ9 (high compresion). The diferences are from 25 to 45 hp.

Honestly, a 99-00 LQ4 might be best for you since it will bolt right up to the TH400 and these can be found much, much cheaper than the aluminum headed (01+) versions. With the money you save you might be able to get some nice ported LS6 heads!

It's not just a PCM tune, I believe if you remove the valley cover the internals are different. I would do a search on it because the blocks are different and a couple guys on here have messed with them.

I tried to do a search and I am not sure what the cylinder shut deal is called and cant find any info on how new i can go until I run into any problems with just installing a cam.

are you reffering to the DOD? where the engine runs around on 4 or 6 until you stomp on it.

What year did displacement on demand show up? Im looking at an 05 LQ4, did this engine have DOD??

not sure the 6.0 truck fi will clear your hood-if the engine had a 4l80e behind it, it will take a turbo 400 also
.400 spacer, flat flywheel
04 3500's had drive by wire

you will also have to mod the oil pan, the ex manifolds you will need to change , and the 4l80 will be tight. just my experience so far in my 67.JOHN

Yes I was referring to Displacement on Demand. When did they start using this and is it something I need to stay away from. I have a cowl hood so the truck intake should fit and I was planning on changing the oil pan and installing headers.
