The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time

With the top up, the sound is very good. It is not as strong as in a coupe, but this 4x 8" setup is similar in sound to my previous 2x10" bandpass setup in my previous coupe. So plenty of bass for quality, you just won't be shaking those around you.
With the top down, well, you lose alot. It is still tons better than w/o the sub setup of course, but the bass volume takes quite a hit. And if it is attention you want, a balanced system with bass in a vert is of course a lot louder than in a coupe to outsiders.
I am in the process of tinkering with a few different concepts with this box, that I think will help the situation by a large amount.
1.) The internal volume you have to work with is .18 cubic feet for each sub. If you are not a basshead it would more effective to couple the enclosures to net .36 cubic feet per sub and tune the port from there. In this arrangement I'm sure you could mod up a slotted port tuned to 40-60 Hz.
2.) I have four subs, so I've modded my box with 3/4" plates to fabricate a 5" slotted port of about half the original port. The "stock" box has just a slot which is basically a 8 square inch x 1 inch port. With this mod I have close to a 3 square inch x 5.5" slot port. By the math this drops the port frequency from around 200 Hz to about 80 Hz. I haven't had a chance to evaluate it in car extensively, but it is quite a difference, and there is still no port noise. I suspect you could reduce the port cross section even more but this seemed on the small end already so I stuck with about 3" effective cross section. Once spring is here I am going to feed the box more power and try out some other port tunings.
Regardless, if you are really pushing the subs hard, you'll probably want to make sure you use the subsonic filter on your amp - or if you don't have one get a pair of 30 or 50 Hz Fmods to keep your subs alive. partsexpress sells them for about 25 bucks.
3.) The last item is something I am forced by winter to wait awhile to try. The box relies upon getting sound through the top, which is what is good about JB's box. The slots are low mounted so the sound does a decent job of snaking it's way through the shield of the dropped top. JB made the box shape to mimick the profile of the plastic seperator, which I think is the right way to do it. However I've noticed that every little bit you can pick the top up off the shelf, opens up a direct path to the ports and makes a huge difference. So what I am going to try is to fabricate a couple small spacers that will keep the top from sitting on the shelf, lifting it by a half inch or inch or so. I think with the right materials, you should be able to keep the top off the shelf a little bit without danger of damaging the top or glass. But I really need nicer weather to mess with this, and it requires a good bit of thought because of the fragility of the top material and glass. I am currently favoring using some foam rubber pads.
Anyone with a sub in their vert trunk can evaluate this very easily. Just drop the top, crank it up, and then crawl in the back seat and lift the top off the shelf an inch or so - it makes a huge difference.
JB's box is very nice, he was excellent to work with and delivered as agreed. For a vert I think this is hands down the best option and am surprised they are not more popular. I am just a bit of a fidgeter and want to see how I can make my system stronger.
If you want to build your own, then I think the next best thing would be a fabricating a plate again mimicking the factory seperator, and equipping it with free-air subs, which would benefit from my thoughts in point 3 above. Actually any setup could benefit alot from point 3 - even if you go the battle ax approch of just dropping a huge box in your trunk.
I need every bit of that tiny trunk, and don't want my trunk lid or trunk rattling - so JB's approach was best for me.

I'm not looking for attention getting, if I wanted that I would delete the rear seats and put in a makeshift thing for two 12's or something. I just want the bass to go somewhere so I can turn it up a lil louder than I can already. I've already changed out the deck and the speakers in the car, I just need the subs
I wouldn't mind getting that subthump but I'm sacrificing my entire trunk for it and I'm not too sure about that right now...maybe when I get to SC I'll think about it
