Default Convertible ONLY???

Hey I was under my car today and saw that it had a steel driveshaft. Its a 2000 t/a. So I start asking some people and they tell me that all convertibles had a steel driveshaft is this true. I know they always say we weigh about 200lbs more and I thought that was just for the convertible motor and the factory sfcs. So if this is true this is another reason we r heavier.

Wrong Wrong Wrong...steel drive shafts only came from the factory on 98 2.73 equipped cars... 3.23 and up and all 99 and up had aluminum. Has nothing to do with vert versus hardtop/t tops Just to clear things up.

I have a steel drive shaft in my 00 Trans am. All verts are going to weigh more than hard tops do to the extra chassis reinforment.

my previous '00 Z28 came with the steel driveshaft, my '01 SS has aluminum
All 2.73 equipped LS1 fbodies come with steel.

LS1 fbodies w/3.23 A4s (standard on WS6/SS's optional on other LS1 V8 fbodies), and all M6's ALL came with aluminum DS

Yea I have the 2.73 rear. I know the verts weigh more but people always ask what makes us weigh more. I was just making a statement that the stell driveshaft just adds to the verts weighing more. At least the ones that have steel.

SCP_Racing: it has nothing to do with verts or SS or TA or Z28 or Formula or TTop..it's the rearend option that dictated the type of driveshaft. A 2 series carrier got the steel driveshaft. A 3 seriers got the aluminum.

Thanks for clearing it up for me. Just means I need another upgrade. I think I will wait for the 12 bolt to go in before I do that. Thats if I decide to keep the vert.

It may have been a warranty replacement. I took my 98 SS in for service in 01 and the aluminum shafts were prone to cracking. I got ripped, because at the time, the GM replacement fix was a steel shaft. Then later they came out with a revised aluminum unit.
