Default Interesting noises and an introduction

Hello all,

I am the lucky guy who purchased iprochargedchevy's 99FRC a little over a month ago. I am an engineering student at the University of Central Florida and work part time at a local performance machine shop. I also work on and off at the space center = pays well, so I was able to save up and actually get a C5. Before the C5 I had a 87 Fiero coupe with a 350 small block and a 2000 V6 firebird daily driver. The fiero was quick but very bare bones, and the firebird was nice... just slow. So I figured I would sell them both and get something that had all the good qualities .

Anyways, on to the noises. Last week I installed a complete exhaust - long tube headers (not sure of the brand), and a magnaflow magnapack exhaust. The headers and exhaust are all stainless. When I drive the car, get it up to temp and shut it off - the exhaust will "tick" like many cars do as the pipes are cooling off. However, the ticks are more like clunks and most sound louder than normal.

Not sure if this is normal with stainless or not but some of the sounds make me wonder if the pipes are in tension... could this lead to cracking? When I put the headers on I bolted them to the head first and then to the mount on the bellhousing. The tabs were not perfectly lined up with the holes, but I was able to get the bolts in. Anyone have any thoughts/experience with this? I think I might try taking the bolts in the bellhousing out just to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for looking,

Gabe

I'd be willing to bet that if you take the bolts out that mount the headers to the bell housing it will quiet down the noise you're talking about.

Might want to find out what brand the headers are. I know the FLP LT's had many that would snap that attachment tab off at the collector leaving a small hole in the collector. I just installed some used FLP's where both tabs had busted off but I just had the holes welded shut and those tabs aren't needed anyways.

Pulled the bolts out this morning and the clunking has gone away. Still ticks, but does not sound nearly as bad as before. Red99TA - any clear way to tell if these are FLP's? I bought the exhaust from a member here on the forum and he could not remember what brand they are. I had to jack the motor up a little to get the drivers side in - seems like I remember someone discussing that you would only have to do that with Kooks. Thanks for the replys,

Gabe

IIRC, the Kooks and ARH headers don't have any attachment points to the bell housing. Do you have any pics of the headers you could post, that would help us figure out what brand they are.

Pics would definitely help. I installed my FLP's from the top by removing the valve covers and unbolting the steering shaft to move it another 1/2" over on the driver's side which was enough to drop them in.

Here's a picture of mine before I had them repaired. FLP are one of the few that use the V-band clamps at the end of the collectors.

The only pictures I have are the ones from the ad:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/northwest...tock-sale.html

Like I said I took the bolts out and the clunking stopped so I dont think I should have any problems. I went from stock exhaust w/ zo6 mufflers to this set-up and I cannot believe the difference in power, even with no tune.

I know him...Derek's a good guy. I'm sure he could tell you what brand the headers are. They look damn good though. I'm sure you'll be fine just leaving them unbolted. If they ever start tapping/knocking against the bellhousing you could always cut the tabs off without affecting the collectors too.

From looking at the pics in the for sale thread I think your headers might be the so-called "ebay headers" or SSAC or OBX brand. They are supposedly made overseas, but alot of guys have had great luck with them, and since they are all stainless, IMHO you can't really go wrong with them. Looks like the ones you have are knock-offs of the Stainless Works LT's
BTW, how does the Mangnapack exhaust system sound,,,,post up some vids if you can.
