Default What does your oil Temp run.

I have a stock C6 with the LS2 and the oil temp runs in the 200's. Is this normal?? I know that it isn't going to run as cool as the water temp but I have seen it in the 220 range. I'm thinking that I might need to put on an oil cooler. What do you guys think.

You are fine in those ranges, it needs to be around 200 to keep the crankcase from building up alot of condensation..

220 should be perfect. You'll never have any condensation build up in your oil, thats for sure. If you were running in the upper 230's then I would say consider, 240's definately.

What kind of oil are you running ?? You might need a little thicker oil.

I have a 402 stroker and run 15w50 mobil 1 as directed by LG Motorsports, and I also have a built in oil cooler. My oil temps barely see 200 degrees unless I am just sitting for a very long time after getting on it a bit.

Seeing that you are in Houston and it gets hot you should be running at least 10w30 mobil 1 or 10w40 to give more protection from the heat. Just trying to help, maybe someone else will chime in and add there 2 cents.

To repeat : I say 220 is normal.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your input. I never thought about building condensation in the crankcase.

Here's my temps after running for over 15 miles on cruise control last summer. All temps had leveled out.

Ambient temp was 97*, speed 77 mph. Oil 237, coolant 201 and tranny fluid 192.

237 sounds a bit high but it was 97 degrees outside. What oil are you running ??

5w-30 Mobil 1 just like the book calls for. Does seem a bit high but it's an automatic Z51 with no oil cooler unlike the manuals.

I didn't know that manuals came with an oil cooler. Before I got the built in oil cooler in my super cool RADIATOR I used to run in the 220's, but now I'm in the 190's with the 402. The 346 ran even cooler.

I'd suggest you run 10w30 in that kind of heat. The 5w30 must be thin as water. Anyways I run 15w50 per LGM's orders on the new stroker.

10W30 might be best down here in the Houston area in the summer. An oil cooler would be better. Don't understand why GM did not put one on the automatics with Z51.

10w40 would offer even more protection. 15w50 wouldn't be advisable in your application though. Works great for mine being a stroker though.

The highest mine has been is 205 degrees. That was in 90 degree heat up in the mountains of colorado. On the way home at 95 degrees doing 80mph the oil temp was 202.

I remember a day beating the **** out of the old 346 when it was fast 78, g5x3 cam, and lg pros with a Vram CAI and I was racing cobras, etc etc win some lose some and I noticed my oil had gotten to 241 !!! However that was on a 90 degree day back in 2005 and also before I upgraded to a super cool radiator w/built in oil cooler. As hot as the oil got, I don't remeber the water temp being an issue at all, oh thats right the fan edit was done and she never got hot after that.

My freshly build 402 (99 C5 M6) was showing 235-239 oil temps and 205-210 coolant temps in 100 degre heat last weekend. I was driving it in the city going back and forth between 4k, 2k, 1k RPM for break in. Once I got back on the open road I had 200 coolant and 230 oil. I am kind of worried since I have a Meziere EWP and a 160 thermo. Anyone seeing those kind of temps with city driving and the cooling mods?

Now that my 402 is making 541 rwhp 505 rwtq it seems that she is running a little warmer. Especially in the Georgia heat (90-100 all week!! )

I would look to see what your fans are set to come on at. My oil temps even with a built in oil cooler were in the upper 220's briefly when we were getting on it for the camera. If you don't have an oil cooler, then I'd suggest you get one. The meziere ewp will be fine. Just verify both your cooling fans are coming on and at what temp. Best of luck, and btw have you gotten her on the dyno or still breaking in. PM me your setup please. Very interested.

Thanks bro, it was a solid 100 when I was seeing those temps and of course I was up and down shifting the car every 5-10 seconds to vary the RPM during break in. I am running Joe Gibbs break in oil. I think it is 20-50? My setup is below

Forged 402 (-10cc coated pistons) rings set up for 300 shot
PREC 2.5 heads milled to 62cc
Comp XER 244/248 .612/ .615 114+4
Mezeire EWP
HS 1.7 NA Rockers
Vararam
Kooks 1 3/4
3" X and connecting pipes
DMH 3" LP electric cutouts
ZO6 Ti exh
Ported FAST 90/ non ported LS2 90mm TB
High flow airbridge
Cometic .040 HG

I think that is all that would effect power. I have 300 more break in miles before I can dyno it.

I think the SCR is 12:1
