Default Rearend questions

So I am new to the whole corvette thing I want to do a set of gears in my 02 c5z. My questions are is the stock rear strong enough to hold 1.6 60 foots or should I upgrade to a dte rear end? Im building the car to be all motor so I will be relying on good short times to get good et's. Also what gear would you recommend 3.90s or 4.10s I still want the car to be able to drive down the highway nice at highways speeds without reving the motor really high while crusing down the highway. I cut 1.56 to 1.64 60's for the past 2 years on a set of Motive gears in the stock housing using a DTE brace and PFADT trans mount. For the 6 years before that I beat the hell outta the stock 3.42 rear (same DTE brace) until it finally gave out (1.58 to 1.68 60's).

The rear can hold as long as you dont wheel hop the hell out of it.....Def. get the DTE brace.....added insurance....I run it, but it is a matter of time for me with what I have going through it on low boost.....

I agree, wheel hop is your enemy. upgrade to at least bilstein shocks too. and ditch the runflats

You mean RUN CRAPS!!! Im running the Nitto Invo's and they are great so far, and hold the power within reason

The left side output shaft is the weak link in the C5 differential. I snapped mine when I launched at the dragstrip with drag radials and a textralia clutch. My first pass with this clutch I left at 4400 rpm and it bogged down to 1600 rpm, for a pretty slow 60' time. So I made the mistake to increase the launch rpm. I went past my target of 5,000 and ended up closer to 6.

So now I have a hardened output shaft and new posi clutches. I still need to get the DTE brace and Z06 axles.

Hey Pat, I have got over 28 years of experience on corvettes. Your question is a very common question that I have been asked by many of my corvette customers.

1st.Yes the stock rear end will hold 1.6 60'...But Not high RPM launches.
Also the left out put shaft is on borrowed time.

2nd.How Much power are you planing on putting to the ground?
This is the most important question of all. This will help answer all the other questions and help you plan out your build.

Hi Pat, if you were to buy a built diff from me I would sell you a RPM built Stage I $1395, Stage II $1695 and both of these prices include all the shipping charges, I will also pay for the core to be sent back. Both of these diff's will handle your power range of 475hp/tq but if you are going to launch the car at real high RPMs then we need to upgrade the C6 ZO6 left output shaft to a 300m harden shaft, $299 extra.

I run 1.50's (9.80's) with the stock rear with just a hardened output shaft, no brace.
I wouldn't build Corvette for short times, it will get VERY expensive rather quickly. But if that is truely your goal, look into a solid rear and just do it once.

I have a RPM Stage 2 in mine and it works great. If you are going to spend the money, go with a RPM!
