hello, recently my buddy's dad just got a 98 C5 targa A4 with 28k miles on it
its 100% stock asside from the catback that came on it, not sure what brand..anyway we are looking into modding it and got to thinkin about free mods for the C5. if there are any i would greatly appreciate some input.
these are the planned mods:
vararam intake.
black powdercoated z06 wheels.
HPP3($200 used, mainly for firming up the auto)

thanks!

There's always the zip tie mod. Its free and works. This involves removing the air filter cover and zip tieing the element to the back half.

Well, its free hp until he gets the Vararam. All you do is take the filter cover off and zip tie the air filter donw to the base. SImple as that.

Nothing with the C5 is 'free'. The F-Body 'free' mods really don't apply to the Y-Body (Vette). Get a decent air intake (Vararam, Donaldson, etc,) Headers, and then decide if you want H/C or FI..

Cheers,

Mark

The only thing I'd have to prove it would be the 10 or so people that were standing there watching.

So you dynoed once. Then proceeded to take off the airbox and ziptie the filter and went right back on the dyno?

Stay away from powder coated wheels, the only two wheel failures I've ever seen were powdercoated. One on the wagon wheels[97-98] one one ZO6 style. Discussed recently on Corvetteforum...

No, I dynoed about three times. Then the tuner said why don't you do the zip tie mod. I said what the hell is that. He told me, I did it, and got back on the dyno 3 more times and got 28 hp. then, we did my tune. Hey, don't believe me, I could really care less all I know is I got 28 FREE hp and that's money well saved. Just keep thinking little things don't add up and you'll probably start getting waxed alot.

And if you don't believe him just go to any of the Corvette boards and do a search. Its not like this is a new thing or unproven.

I'm going to have to try out this zip tie mod when I get my C5. I'm going to do mine differently though, I'll make 2 or 3 quarter mile runs in stock form, then do the mod, then do 2-3 more runs. That'll tell the story better than anything.

Does anyone have any pics on how to do the zip tie mod?

it's really quite simple, but no pics to show you.
basically, remove the filter assembly and just put back on the section the air filter sits in, using zip-ties to hold the air filter element in place. I did it on mine till I got the vararam, which you will really like. good luck !
