Default Difference between 98 and 99 (did a search)

Ok I was reading in another thread that people were recommending someone that was looking into getting a used C5 to get a 99-up rather than a 97 or 98. Can someone give me reasons why? I read that it was harder to tune, is this true, and why?

thanks

I'm looking at a '97 right now. I'd like to know if there is fact or rumor to this too.

I do not think it is a tuning issue. The heads on the 97-98 LS1's are perimeter bolt heads not the center bolt like the 99 and up. This may cost extra cash when it comes head swap time...

how much extra would it cost? I cant imagine to much.

I was reading a link from JRP's sig that stated this:
24. 1998 cars have a completely different PCM from 99+ cars
Is there something wrong with the 97,98 PCMs, are they harder to tune, are there less people that will tune these cars? Can you swap in a 99+ PCM?

97 and 98 cars do require different tuning software than 99 and later cars. It's out there, but the pre 99's always seem to lag in support and features. I also recall a limitation on pre 99 MAF tables that limit the amount of airflow they can be tuned to accept. Although to be completely honest I have no idea if this is a big deal or not. The heads as mentioned above are another issue. The last difference is the availability of Active Handling and the HUD. If you want either of these options, you'll have to get a 99 or newer car. So there isn't anything really wrong with a 97 or 98 car. They just may be a little harder to get tuned and a head swap may cost you a bit extra. The cost difference to get a 99 is small enough that I usually recommend going that route to avoid these hassles. But if you find a pristine 97 or 98 that you really like, go for it.

Active handling was also available on the 98s, RPO JL4 is listed as being produced on 5356 Corvettes in the 1998 model year.

The 97s and 98s and 99+ have different PCMs. However, HP Tuners (www.hptuners.com) is available for 98 and 99+ now.

when you say "different tuning software", do you mean shops that dyno tune cars need different software? And if so, is it harder to find a shop to tune the 97, 98s?

Can anyone link me to some info on the active handling and HUD?

thanks a bunch

Shops will need specific software to tune the older PCM's yes. Most will have it. Development and support usually lags for the older PCM's, but is there. In a nutshell the HUD (heads up display) will display gauge information up unto the windshield similar to what you see in a fighter plane. Active handling is cornering aid that selectively applies individual brakes to correct the car when it senses the vehicle is passing its cornering threshold. I nice aid to learn the car and also nice if you hit that unnoticed patch of gravel in a corner.
