Default Stock Runflats suck?

Why do the stock good years suck on corvettes is it because they weigh more than regular tires if so how much, or is it they dont get traction. Whats a good alternative to the stock good years on a stock C5.

I was always under the assumption that it has to do with the design of the run flat (ie - the sidewalls are too stiff, it's a heavier tire, etc.). Personally, I'm anti-Goodyear to begin with. So I see that as problem #1...just my 2cents.

Horrendous road noise, rougher ride, terrible tread life, no traction, poor rain performance. GoodYear Runcraps have NO redeaming qualities other than being able to run flat.

I did, however, manage to pull of a 1.80 60ft time at the track with them the other day.

They lack the grip of better tires. The Goodyear Eagle SC (super car) tires that come on a Z06 are supposed to be as good as Michelin Pilot Sports according to an article on tires I read. So that would be a good option in my opinion. They can pull 1.04 Gs on a stock Z06, so they couldn't be to bad...LOL! And they have two tread designs so they can handle well on wet or dry roads. Otherwise I would opt for the Michelin Pilot Sports.

The C5 I am getting this morning comes with a fresh set of stock runflats on it, so it will be a while before it gets new tires. But it's nice to know they are capable of 1.80 60fts! I'll just be happy if I can cut consistent 2.0 60fts at the track in my car (which is auto with the 3.15 axle)

Patman, not to brag but you know I've been known to pull some 60ft times that leave others shaking their heads. You have to DRIVE these tires to 1.80s. In other words, your results may vary.

Recall that I also pulled several 1.51s on 275/40/17 Nittos in full street trim.

I've also been known to pull 60ft times on my cars that other people find amazing though.

I pulled 1.91 60fts in my 95TA on BFG Comp TAs with a 2.73/A4 combo. My nearly stock 95 Formula pulled 1.94 60fts with a 3.23/A4 combo and F1 GS D3s. I cut 1.59 60fts in my Mustang with 10" slicks, but with a super stiff suspension.

I tried a couple of full throttle launches today with my car and it seems to come out of the hole without too much spin so I think on a good track it should have no problem cutting 2.0s and perhaps a few low 1.9s when they lay down a nice bunch of VHT.

The biggest complaint I've heard with the GY runflats is noise. And it's supposed to get worse as the tires wear.

Speaking of tire wear, some people get 8K out of the tires and others get 35K with similar driving styles. Go figure.

I caught the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S runflats on sale through Tirerack.com and bought a set of those, replacing the stock GY runflats on my 04 coupe with only about 3K miles on the GYs. The Michelin's have a much better all-season performance rating with a huge reduction in road noise. Plus, I still have the security of run flats.

BTW, there are several other alternatives tires so don't take our word on any of them.

After 15K miles (on my first C5 which was an M6) the rears were completely toast, wires hanging out all the way around. I have about 6K on my '04 and the rears are still looking like new. From the looks of them I'd say they'll make 25K without trouble. Maybe it being an A4 has something to do with it.

I just got my F1Supercar tires, same size as Z06 tires. I was worried after hearing lots of reviews about noise and what not. I tell you, they are much quiter on the road than the runcraps, the ride has softened considerably also. The car is just much quiter all around now, along with adding those Floyd, real thick and heavy floor and cargo mats, my car is finally a quite cruiser on the weekend. It makes it feel like a different vehicle. A lot of people complain about the vette being to noisy and riding too stiff, but I tell you the change in tires was dramatic, not including that the cornering level has jumped to instant sick levels. The straight line accleration grip has considerably increased also, but I have not had the time to find out how much yet until this Friday when I go to test and tune. Also lastly the new wider rims and tires feel a little lighter than the stock rims and run flats.

Alternative? Goodyear F1GSD3's... Great dry and wet traction and have cut .2 of my 60' times.

A good alternative are the BFG G Force T/A KDW. They are a great all around tire. My dad had them on his 98 and they were way better than the runflats.
