I've heard people say that they turn the steering wheel hard left and right a few times. That might help.

If you haven't already, check CorvetteForum.com. (Their server failed yesterday and has been sporatic today.) You'll find LOTS of comment on the column lock issue.

For a long term fix, there is a recall out on the column lock problem. Check with your Chevy dealer -- the fix is a PCM re-flash. Also, buy a column lock bypass. Very cheap (about $25??) and very easy to install (less than 15 minutes).

Hope this helps.

I just came from the dealership...they told me there is no recall for the steering lock issue.

I also heard they will have to tear the column apart and it would be 450.00. Where can I get this bpass lock??

Thanks,
Jason

I've got the recall info at home.

Since I had already installed the column lock bypass, and because I also have a custom LS1Edit tune, I won't be taking mine in for the recall. (They have to flash the pcm for the recall)

If it should happen again, turn the key at the same time you give the steering wheel a hard jerk, and it should free up. I had it happen to me about 15-20 times over a two month period before I installed the CLB.

Mike98SilVert's post has tells you how to unlock it & he also includes a link with instructions on how to install the CLB.

Turn the key on and quickly shake the wheel left to right a few times (be sure to hit the stops). You may need to repeat it a few times. Be sure that you are cycling the key after a few tries. I've had this happen a few years ago and this got it unlocked.

Quick note, someone on CF had the recall done and they had the column lock up two weeks later. Doesn't appear GM's fix works. I would get the CLB as soon as you can.

Thanks for the help guys.

The car is at the dealer right now...I told them to stop work on it, until I get there and try to unlock it. One thing that I might have overlooked is, when it first hapened and I tried to drive the car, it stalled. I read somewhere the fuel shuts off. Will this still happen even if I try to unlock it by jerking the wheel left and right?

Thanks,

Once it unlocks, you're good to go. At least I was.

All the recall does is reflash the computer so if the column lock occurs, it shut off the fuel. The best solution is the "jerk the wheel" method and this breaks the lock. The next best is the CLB solution ($9.00 in part from Radio Shack or $35.00 + instructions from a vendor). If you have a custom tune, it had better been with LS1edit v1.5 or better or you cannot reflash that tune. The GM reflash is in segment 1 and all the edit programs work in segment 7. Any change in segment 1 would tell the edit software it is not liscensed to work on that PCM. FWIW

Yeah, there is a recall. But, the manuals can lock up again. The autos, they just disable the column lock, so they can't lock up again. Get a column lock bypass from one of the sponsers. I got mine from Thunder Racing.
Hope this helps.

I installed the bypass and I still get the message pull key for 10 seconds. If I try to move with that message, the car stalls. Is there someway to fix it so the message goes away?

Does reset on the DIC help? Pull the battery cable for 10 minutes help? That's what I would try. Maybe someone with the bypass installed will chime in.

Blown Interceptor, sorry for the confussion. The CLB cannot unlock a column after it is locked. Only a re-programming can achieve this. The CLB can only prevent the column from locking.
Again, sorry for the confussion. I thought you were taking it in to have the computer re-programmed then install it.
