Question Has anyone ever removed a C5's airdam?

You know, that black plastic thingy that scrapes on EVERYTHING. Just wondering how it looks without it and if it caused any problems of any sort.

Thanks.

I had to remove it when I did my ATI install... theres nothing to it. It changed the look but I didnt really take notice that well as I knew I would be reinstalling it when I got all the plumbing done. I would imagine its much like the f-bodys, in that we probably need it to keep enough air going to the rad.

Thumbs up

Thanks. Yeah, that's what I'm concerned with. I might give it a try and see. Worst case scenario, it runs a little hotter than usual, and maybe looks goofy. I'll put it back on. Best case, nothing changes functionally, it doesn't look goofy, and no more scraping on EVERYDAMNTHING.

How about replacing it with a big mouth air dam?

Maybe you could shave it down a half-inch or so? Mine also scrapes a lot, and I am seriously considering trimming that sucker.

Sure no problem ! here is what Tom had to say about the install and The C5 Big Mouth Air Dam.

Hi Eric,

Installed last week. It was a little tight between the skids (looks like the skids are more rounded on 2004 cars). Had to cut-off side rubber pieces. Since I do not have the factory air dam, install was different. I moved thr big mouth more to the rear and tilted the plate up to meet with angle of the radiator. I used the orignal frame saver bolt holes. Did not need any other screws. The rear edge of the big mouth butts up against the skid support plate welds. Looks very nice.

I have been running tests for several days. I also installed a 160* t-stat (finally available for the 2004 cars). This allows the big Dewitts radiator to work properly. With 105* ambient temps, I see a 12* drop in temps from street to freeway 65 MPH downgrade driving (this is with no fans running). This drop occurs in about 1 mile of driving so the big mouth is working. The 160* t-stat will be too low for winter driving, hopefully the 180* units will be out by then.

Thanks for bringing this product to market. It was the perfect solution for my cooling system.

Tom

I don't think it is a good idea to completely remove it. You can trim it some, but I heard somewhere that is neeeded for cooling.

I've sure been getting ALOT of requests for that lately. Maybe it's time to get off my lazy booty and get with it.

I trimmed mine in half and removed the side pieces as i lowered my car 4"..i have a buthered fan shroud also to help my filter,in the hawaii (high humidity) traffic,i still won't over heat, but i will get the fans cycling from high to low,i'm going to set my fans up better when i get my Vinnci controler.
Oh,the air damn is on a hinge so it rolls back when scrapping, mines been scrapping for the 2 1/2 years i owned the car, still there.Sorry these are the best pics i have,i really don't have a good enough camera to take some nice pics..

Cool,i actually have it a hair lower now,i was unhappy when i saw the pics,i can't stand tire to fender gap.
The front is 25 1/4" from the ground to middle of fender lip,the rear is 26 1/4 ".The roof of the car is just above my belly button (6-1").
Now i have to get my power up some,i see your mods...........
