Default Gears, Catback, Headers, or Cam?

Wished I could do all four but just not feasible. I have a 2004 MN6 Vert w/ just a Halltech Stinger intake. I don't track or street race and I have only laid rubber once in the 2500 miles I have on it. I rarely hit 5000 RPM and probably hit 6000 maybe once or twice. Basically I like romping on it from light to light on occasion to feel the acceleration. I am thinking gears would give me the best response I am looking for. I am looking for a dyno right now so I have some base numbers. Maybe just some tuning and 4.10's would make me happy. I will eventually get a cam and headers but need the OOMPH now but economically. Seems like the TR224 is street mannered and will give me some decent numbers. Is there a better CAM directed at lower RPM's. So what is the recommendation. Will the gears alone give the thrill I am looking for since I like accelerating to 60-70 MPH only. Thanks,

Jim Kay

PS. I LOVE THIS CAR!

If it were me I'd do a TRex, Kooks LTs, Z06 catback, and custom tune.

If you are looking for something for more power, but don't track the car, it seems to me that gears would give you the most get up and go, but will also provide the biggest penalty for a street driven car. Not to mention that traction will be an issue on street tires as well. Think I might do a tune with headers, and consider headers that don't produce a "peaky" curve. LG's or QTP's seem to provide a fatter power band in the RPM range you are looking at. Also, the Z06 Ti CAT back is another good addition for relative cheap money since most guys sell them for pretty reasonable prices.

Depends, how much power you want to add in the future.if you going to be around 500hp,gears will spin you hard on launchs at the track unless your running slicks.Heck i can't even get traction now with an auto and 3:15s and a couple bolt ons.(and i don't even have run flats anymore).
I'm doing cam and headers in Nov.I want to keep my 180mph top speed.

I'd say do the headers and keep the stock exhaust if you're ready to spend $1500. The gears are a waste of $$$ if you ask me when it costs $1300 just to swap the trans-axle. The headers will give you a killer sound and another ~20hp and be better if you're planning a cam further down the road. Option B, I'd do an off-road x-pipe, O2 sims and a cat-back if you can get away without having worry about passing the sniffer and if you weren't planning a cam. This will probably be the louder of the two. As for results, I'd guess 345rwhp with option A and 340rwhp with option B. Just my 2cents.

Given what he said, go gears. 4.10s will give you the extra umph you're looking for. Any money left over get a different exhaust.

Hey Folks,

I really appreciate the help and info. I should mention that I would eventually like to get to 400 RWHP (many financial years from now). I am not worried about top speed. Probably sad that my car has never been over 85 MPH. I think I am going with gears first, then catback and headers. I am order HPtuner and considering a wide band so as I upgrade I can do my own tuning. I guess I have some studying to do on that one. Thanks again for the help.

Good choice, you won't regret it. HP Tuners is a killer program but there is definitely a learning curve.

Gears would be a great route for you. One thing you will have to ask yourself is what the goal will be for your car. If you just start buying what everyone else says you want then you won't be happy. If you don't drag race then don't buy drag racing stuff for example 4.10 gears. If you don't plan on getting tires to hold that gear then the gear itself is useless. Get things that would benefit your driving style. Headers only enhance the stock setup, they don't ruin anything. Even a mild gear upgrade to 3.73 will give amazing results in E.T. and seat of the pants, with better tires of course. In the end, you have to live with the mods so choose wisely.

Ive done many mods upto and including a built motor. foolishly , I never did gears. I am looking at either a smaller cam or 4.10s. Gears may give you whine, but it is going to be very loud with ORP headers and cat back. My advice on the cat back is make sure your set up does nto drone and that it is touring. Sport exh. would be very loud with 224. My wife never complains about the sound of my car on the interstate or in town. If going 224 go with 1 3/4" primaries on your headers, esp if doing stage 2 heads. Have fun!

go 3.90s if your a manual not 4.10s, 3.42s not 3.73s if your an auto. i say this becuase your not a drag racer you simply want to play with it. both those choices will work very well on a virtually stock car and when you do go for your goal they wont be a hinderence ie you want spin like hell. yet still give you the added acceleration benefit while not hurting drivability. honestly any of those gears would be good for your car, the 3.90s and the 3.42s just wouldnt be as drastic a change.

seat of the pants feel is what it sounds like your after. you cant be gears for a manual or gears and a TC if your an auto. not for the price anyway.
