Default Those important first mods...

Ok so i've got a new short shifter and now i want more power.
I went with Hurst short throw btw

Next i'm looking to get a new intake and exhaust system. Could you guys who have already been down this road tell me what you have, how it performs, and your opinoin on how it rates to what all is out there.

As of now i'm looking to install an LS6 intake with Longtube headers.....but thats still WAY up in the air. I'm still doing my homework if you know what i mean lol.

Anyway, as always everyone's help is much appreciated.

Well, I say for intakes you have three choices: Vararam, Halltech Stinger/Trap set up, or Donaldson Blackwing, in about that order. I don't have any as my car came with this ram air set up that is kind of like the Trap. You should see nice gains with all.

As far as exhaust, I have Corsas. I love the sound of Magnaflows, but having a six speed you could just slap on some Borla Stingers and be done with it. Any of these would be nice, the Borla is the loudest.

Headers are easy, get LGM's. Big power and built with quality in mind. If you want something cheaper I would say KOOKS are next in line.

One thing I would get right away if I was you is an underdrive pulley set up. I still don't have mine, but it's a quick nice gain that is good for prolonging your steering pump life.

as far as mufflers go, my friends and I have done extensive research (1/4mile track times), and have found that the borla mufflers are the best muffler to get, they accually trap the same mph as straight long tube headers but have much more bottom end power and get quicker et's, faster than flowmaster, cherry bomb, ect.. I've got the dual borla's on my C4 and when I get a cat back for my C5 I'm goin with the borla and long tube headers w/ no cats... unless you have alot of money to spend on an air induction kit, get a K&N filter and do the zip tie mod... ls6 intake is also on the list... next thing I think I'm going to do is get some good spark plug wires just because I've experienced electrical gremlins in the past and it was because those stupid 7mm stock plug wires were cracked but you couldnt see it from up top... you dont want to know how long it took me to figure that one out

I have a 99 frc as well. Mods and times listed below. The Blackwing is good stuff. Fits perfect and looks clean like it belongs there. Corsa is the great exhaust. Sounds amazing at open throttle but you can have a normal tone conversation at speeds on the highway.

Hey Assasin, we do have the same car.........all 99 FRCs have black interior

As for exhaust i looking really hard at the "Borla Exhaust" over "Corsca Exhaust." Check this chart out....

Now granted this chart came off of a Borla product site, i still don't think it would be to far off from true after all that i've read.

I'm still not having as much luck as i would like in finding info on the LS6 intake. If anyone finds any links please post them.

Aslo i'm still up in the air for headers, as i haven't been able to do that much research yet....but def longtube headers w/ no cats

ive seen many before and afters of exhaust change outs. theres no real difference in them all. they will all be better than stock. assassins research my be true, but on the dyno it just comes down to every car being different. with that in mind get what you think sounds the best and you can afford.

for headers melrose and tpis make very nice coated long tubes that fit very well. random technology makes cat/xpipe set up that will with those headers. for stainless theres LG and Kooks as well as QTP and Stainless works. they all will work well. dont be fooled be LGs claims though on their headers. if you dont tune it afterwards the gains arent anything better than say Melrose or Tpis.

for intakes i like the blackwing. the vararam reportedly works when looked at on the street or at the track. on the dyno its not going to show any real gains. but it is a ram air system, so unless the car is moving its not going to work as intended. voltair(sp?) also makes and intake that looks good. KN has a twin intake system, but im not a fan of it.

scour ebay and the used ads for an LS6 intake. its worth the money. the FAST intake is not IMHO. you may need to have it tuned to see the best gains with that intake but just bolting it on will be an improvement.

what i would do depending on how far you want to go with this car is get all the bolt ons done including the ls6 and then get it tuned. if your planning heads/cam or blower then just wait. you do not need it tuned for the bolt ons, but it will help.

as for the underdrive pulley. thats a hell of a lot of work for something simple that only gives marginal gains. the rack has to be moved in order the pull the old pulley off, this isnt the most fun and its messy. id wait on that until the pulley has to come off for a cam install or pinning the crank for a blower honestly. if you autox or road race the car and burning the ps pump up be comes a problem, get the turn one pump. good peice.

Thanks for the info....

I am definately getting everything tuned as my buddy has a set of 99HP Tuners for me to use. If i'm thinking this right, i should be able to add the bolt-ons.....tune for them. Then when i get my cam setup i can reflash back to stock and retune....

Anyway this is the setup that i'm currently looking at....

(air intake is still up in the air....still researching)
LS6 Intake
LGM Headers, X-Pipe, Borla Stinger Cat-back system

followed up with an HP tune.....

Who makes the turn one PS Pump as this will be a Road Course Vette by this spring....or at least i hope i'll be done by then lol

Borlas do flow more, but I have been in three different Vettes that had Borla Stingers. All three had a resonance at approximately 1800-2000rpm. It was bad enough to really get on your nerves when cruising on the interstate. It (bad resonance) is interpretive though to the ears of each. I went with Corsa Touring mufflers specifically to have no resonance. When and if you go to a head/cam setup it will be much louder!!! Before you buy find someone local who has Borlas and spend some time in their car....

Good Luck..

The flow #s arent representative of anything if you ask me being it just lists company names and not systems tested. Putting Borla's top of the line system up against B&B or Corsa's base system doesnt show **** outside of Borla's best vs everyone else's "worst".

The LG headers and X pipe are really nice. Adding that w/ a Blackwing or VaraRam is a good combination. But IMO for mufflers, screw Borla and go with GHL Magnums. They sound great @ idle and scream @ WOT. Outside of that, your mods sound about right.

Btw, welcome to the board and keep the wave alive!

Also consider the titanium exhaust off the Z06. You can find them used for 400 and they are a great weight savings and are pretty much straight flow-through. My first thought was Borla too, but after some research and talking to some folks, I'll probably stick with the Z06. The cats are supposed to be the weak link in the exhaust system. An off-road x-pipe would be good. Also consider the dyna-flow supermaxx headers/exhaust setup. As good as the others and probably the easiest bolt-on...

and throttle body
Intake like vortex, vararam and cat back is what I did first then the rest.
410 gears for the mn6 3.73 for the autos.

I agree with the intake choices. All depends on how much you want to spend.

Most of the "high dollar" east cost racers have gone to Kooks headers. Since I believe they would use the brand that produces the most HP, it says something to me.

Note, have not heard an aftermarket exhaust that does not have resonance. All depends on what sounds the best to you.. I like my B&B PRTs. Give me what I feel is a muscle car sound.

BTW.... You can wipe your *** with any mfg charts showing how great their product is as compared to others.

JMHO

For intake I suggest just doing the zip-tie mod... spend that saved $$$ on another mod, and replace the zip-tie with something nicer looking down the road.
