I'm not sure where you are coming up with 15 rwhp from? I had 379/361 before the cam and 411/375 after the cam. I gained 32 peak rwhp and 35 rwhp at 6500 rpms. My rear wheel torque gain was only 14, but that is peak, and if you look at the area under the curve on the before and after dyno, I gained everywhere and was up 28 at 6500 rpms. So peak numbers can be deceiving. But even at peak I gained far more than 15 rwhp...LOL!

G5X-3 [114 lsa] .... Seems we have two opinions regarding the drivability of this cam. What is acceptable to one is not to another.. I am about to upgrade from my Comp 224/.580 on 112.. Made 395/405.. Cary says he makes 395 w. oem heads with his G5X-3 [114 lsa] cam..

HMMMMM

Dean-o, I'm looking at that cam as well. Why did you choose that over the MTI X1?

Can you post your graph? It sounds like it has some good mid range torque gains?

I can't speak for dean-o but when I talked to MTI they advised me to get the X1 unless I was looking at forced industion in the future. They both look like great cams, I am definitely intrigued by the G1's numbers, I just couldn't find enough people running it since its still a fairly new grind. Sounds like a great cam though! I think you would be happy with either. I'll post some numbers an a month or two when I get it finished...I believe dean-o has his graph posted somewhere on this board.

Do a search for Dean-o, click on the thread titled "MTI G1 cam installed..." then look on page two and the graph is posted there.

cam specs:
G1 - 228/232 .588/.575 113 lsa
X1 - 230/227 .591/.571 112 lsa

When I had my headers installed Jayson at MTI was telling me about the G1, which wasn't available at the time. It is a interesting grind because it has different lobe profiles on intake and exhaust because the intake has less duration and more lift than the exhaust which has more duration and less lift. Which means the intake will open quick and further and the exhaust will open less but longer, which is good for cylinder scavenging. So with the LS6 heads being so efficient from the factory, I decided to go with the G1 which is biast towards the exhaust. So there you go. That was how I based my decision. I gained 32 peak rwhp and up to 35 rwhp at 6500 rpms! That is without any wideband tuning on the dyno.

Dean

Oh, I thought the norm for Z06's with a good set of headers (like LG's), tuning and all the bolt ons was around 390-400 rwhp?

Maybe, if ALL the bolt ons includes: a FAST intake, 90mm throttle body and MAF. All of those things are stock on my car. Plus I have cats and the stock titanium cat back system. There is a lot of things I haven't done that would result in more power "bolt on wise". In lieu of that, my numbers are very respectable.

The ones I recall were mostly LG longtubes and all the basic bolt on's without any LSX items. Few were over 400rwhp.

But your number are really nice, I wouldn't be suprised to see you up over 430+ with tuning, no cats, ported TB.

I have full bolt ons, headers, exhaust. high flow cats, vararam and tune, I have 379HP. 390-400 is pretty high for bolt ons some have done it, but not many.

Dean-o, those are great numbers and if I get that same Hp with my X1 I will be very, very happy. Nice ride!
Oh, by the way, did they have to drill your throttle body to make the car idle?

2 slow, there are not many(if any) ZO6s with 400rwhp or more with bolt ons only. I know some that have come close and there may be a few out there, but to suggest that is normal or average, it is not. Now that I think about it, I do remember one guy. He had absolutely every conceivable bolt on imagineable and he was at 401rwhp. It would have significantly cheaper had he just bought headers and a cam. He was determined to get over 400 with stock internals and he did....at a fairly significant cost....and IMO less reliability due to the myriad of non-stock parts under the hood.

Thanks, yes you usually have to drill the hole in the throttle blade a little bit larger.

Is anybody else puzzled by this post. It appears your car is near stock and you run mid 11s regularly?....with no cage? At want point do you need a cage(I thought NHRA rule was under 12 seconds)? And what is the fear of running a little faster? Do you think that will put you into the 10s or something and THEN need a cage? Sorry for the question but that post came off a little confusing to me.

And in answering your original post, the G5X3(114) seems to be a pretty streetable cam and produces pretty big power. When Lou came out with that cam, he did the bobble head test. He put a bobble head on the center console and you could see how the car idled by how much the bobble head moved. BTW, the G5X3 at 112 would require fly cutting the pistons....not the 114(I'm no expert but that is what Lou said...and I reckon he is).

The new NHRA rule for 2005 is 11.5 and slower just requires a helmet in a hardtop or coupe.

Sorry for the confusion...The NHRA changed the rule in the mid-late summer for "Stock" cars to be able to run 11.5 with no cage. Jan 1st, they will change the rule again to allow "ALL" cars to run 11.5 or slower with no cage. No fear of running faster, I just think a smaller cam will be easier to drive and easier on the springs. I can run mid 11's (11.7) but not consistantly, maybe with a cam I can, maybe not. I guess if I get greedy for power I can always swap in a G5X3, but for now its the X1.

Good luck in your quest, Dave. I am sure that cam will do just fine while offering some decent driveability. I guess I was out of the loop on the new ruling re: cage.

Here you go, I dug these up for ya....

NHRA June
(Unmodified Vehicles)

NHRA Novenber
(All Vehicles)

It does also note that tracks do not have to go by the new rules, they can use their own discression, but I hope they all will use the new rules.

Good luck next season! Who knows, I might get the G5X3 and some heads next winter...
