I had a conversation with a colleague the other day and he was arguing that the LT5 ZR-1 Engine was still available in the new corvettes.
the facts as I am familiar with:
1. The last ZR-1 Vette rolled of the line in 1995.
2. The current generation of Vettes either have the LS-1, or the LS-6 from the factory available to the consumer. THERE ARE NO ZR-1/LT5 MOTORS IN ANY FACTORY C5.
Of course after much argument, I go to the internet from credible sources ( including ZR-1 net) and showed him the real facts.
Then to add insult to injury, I showed him an older (97-98ish) Motor Trend Magazine with featuring John Lingenfelter's then brand new stroker kit for the C5. Lingenfelter:"Any die hard ZR-1 fan interested in more power would probably want to get a ZR-1 engine inside this. But I really doubt an LT5 would really fit!"
His defence, "what does that guy really know?"
Then he tries to act really smart and call his local mechanic, which 1. I know all to well, 2. Totally knows that it requires factory certified training just to perform service or maintenance on a ZR-1 Vette, which the mechanic doesn't have. My colleague then hangs up with the mechanic, and partially concedes, "we're both right. He [the mechanic] said it's just a 20K more optional engine. He works on them all of the time. " I refuted and said, "No way, I'll run down the street in person to the mechanic, then to the dealership you think you saw this thing at." Of course the mechanic never admitted to anything my colleague lied about, then the dealership said, "exactly what I mentioned that is just plainly known to the public. Your colleague is much behind times and badly misinformed."
I am aware that this is a really horrible post to deal with, however I'd like to see more persons who can confirm with me that what he believes is pure fantasy.

Your friend who knows nothing about a C5 is very wrong. In fact I have never heard a statement about any C5 as wrong as what your friend/co-worker is trying to you with.

And it's double overhead cam? And the intake manifold is controlled such that it delivers power down low and up high (via switched runners?)
To me the DOHC and the amount of technology GM put into them is really cool.
Dunno 1/4 mile times of ZR1s though

The best version of the LT5 was rated at 405HP just like the new ZO6. ZR1 owners were told that these would be the fastest Corvettes produced. Thats why they sold for like$80,000. I think alot of them are pretty pissed off at GM right now because the new ZO6 is rated at the same horsepower but yet a hell of alot faster. I think the ZR1's were pulling high 12's-13.0s. And yes 95 was the last year for them. Tell your buddy to read Motor Trend or Car and Diver more often he might learn something.

The ZR-1 is a cool motor. It is capable of making much more powe than an LS1/LS6. There is a N/A ZR1 on motor that is making 900HP.
GM figured out though that they could make their HP target with a low cost mass produced 2 valve motor that could be used in multiple lines. So the LS1 got canned.
A buddy of mine is the service manager at a dealership. GM just had a "clearance" sale on the last "New" zr-1 motors. His boss bought 3 of them for $12K per motor.
If your friend need further confirmation I can give him lots of ZR-1 owners on the Corvetteforum who would give him more data on the ZR-1 than he would ever care for.
No, you can't buy the LT-5 anymore...

a guy swore that he rented a 2002 red mustang w/ a 4 cilinder in it and after about an hour of arguing we bitch slaped him then took him to the nearest ford dealer
