Z-06 Gear swap question?
Z-06 Gear swap question? What do I need to do to put lower gears in an '02 Z-06? I want to go to 3.73's. Can I just buy a gear package or do I need a whole new diff? I have been told I need a whole new diff, if that is true than could someone explain why? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? You should just need to buy a gear package, because the IRS systems are pretty strong, so you wouldnt really need to replace anything in that respect, but it probably wouldnt hurt to strengthen up the u-joints or half shafts.

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? I would not do your own gears. I'd get them installed professionally by a shop who has done them before.
C5 gears are different than the f-body, and require special tools.

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? I'm not sure going from 3:15 to 3:73 but when swapping from 2:73 to 3:42 you need new carriers with the gears. I think this would be worth checking into. It ended up being cheaper for me to just purchase the new unit however with the price of a 3:73 being almost or double the cost of the 3:42 unit it seems worth doing the gear swap.

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? I swapped out my factory 3.15 for a new 3.42 unit myself. Was time consuming but not that challenging.

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? Let me clarify my prior comment. I will be installing gears this spring as Mike has done, but I wont just buy a ring and pinion and try to set them up in the housing.

Re: Z-06 Gear swap question? 4.10's all the way, had CARTEK put them in for me ... I'm launching at 5500 rpm, with stock output shaft. Last year, I heard they are exclusive and hard to get - but, by now I am sure it's an easy ring and pinion swap, any half way intelligent person can figure out. Doing it on a C5 is a bit more tricky, since you have to drop a lot of sh*t from the rear of the car <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />
