Oil cooler

Oil cooler Question for the LS-1 /LS-6 Vette guys.
I have a nice oil tap part that bolts up to the area above the oil filter. Im trying to make a package for an oil cooler. I have read all about the thermostat issues. I am using the 96 impala police coil which is aluminum and compact. (not a large cooler). It tucks nicely under the floor pan. As I will soon be running a magnacherger on the LS-6 my question is do I really need an oil thermostat with a relatively small cooler? (CTS-V Cadillac)
