Default Shifter ?'s

I just got a 2002 Corvette and the shifter feels too tall, does anyone know where to get a shorter stick or a whole new shifter? I have seen the B&M Shifter is it any good? I looked at the corvette sticky and did a search but could not find anything.

I have a hurst shifter and its amazing!!!, on the otherhand I also have my stocker sitting in a box not being used, I've heard of guys cutting them down to get the desired throw, if you want to pick up my stocker let me know.... otherwise the hurst or b&m is worth the $$, shop around though, you could save as much as $40.....

I agree. I have a Hurst. If you just want it shorter you can cut the stock one, or try a different ****. The MGW **** will screw down further on the shaft.

To lower a Vette you do not need lowering springs. You simply crank some bolts down. You can get about 1" drop on stock bolts. To go lower than that you need to cut the front bushings and install longer bolts in the rear. Or the unltimate is coil overs, then you can put the car inthe weeds.

You should check out www.corvetteforum.com especially the tech tips, lots of good info there.

I agree about the Hurst shifter. I like the feel of it better than the B&M. The Hurst is also adjustable. You can replace the internal springs to tailor the firmness to your liking.

As far as lowering the car; that is one of the great things about the C5. You don’t need to replace the springs to lower it. The ride height is adjustable. You can lower the car by simply turning the adjusting screws/bolts in the front and rear suspension. It might take you a ½ hour – 45 minutes. Do a search on the Corvette Forum for exact instructions.

I lowered mine about 1 ½ inches and the ride quality did not seem to change. It appears to me that the way the suspension is set up lowering the car will not change the spring rate.

If you lower the car more than an inch you will want to change to Bilstein Sport shocks. The stock shocks will bottom out causing a very dangerous handling condition.

I've got a b&M ripper, and have no complaints at all. It was a little stiff when it was brand new but after a couple thousand miles it has loosened up a little and feels great.

How long have you had it, both mine and my dads were pretty stiff at first, but they seemed to loosen up a bit after a few thousand miles

Would changing out your shifter void the warrantee on the car?

It depends a lot on your driving style. If you really push your car to the limit, you may bottom out the stock shocks even if you are lowered only one inch. The problem typically occurs when you hit a big dip while in a very high speed (100mph+) cornering situation. This can easily cause loss of control of the vehicle.

If you drive like a sane person you will probably not have any issues. (But what fun would that be?)

I have heard of cases where transmission warranty work was denied because the dealer discovered an aftermarket shifter on a vehicle(s).

If you want an aftermarket shifter, don’t let worries about your warranty stop you from getting one. If you ever have to take your car in for warranty work, just reinstall the stock shifter. It’s an easy job.
