The new C6 ZO6 is awesome in stock form. From a modding standpoint, it is a great base to build on. I'm not totally sold either on the C6 styling, but I imagine like any Corvette I've owned, it will grow on you. (always happens) To say that the new C6 ZO6 is lighter than the C5 ZO6, I need to see that in print, seeing my C5 ZO6 weighs 3050lbs. according to our local asphalt plant scales. The C6 ZO6 with only a larger cam replacement would make a huge difference on output, but in stock form a modded C5 ZO6 can easily surpass the output. What I find nice about the C6 ZO6 is the ability to attain 60mph in first gear, to account for the high 3 second 0-60 times with the 7000rpm stock redline. If you invest the money in a C5 ZO6, there is no reason why it can't beat a stock C6 ZO6 at the drags. In the handling department, the C5 ZO6 is still a 1g car. That is no slouch, but some extra investment in the suspension would be needed I feel to beat a stock C6 ZO6 on the track.

I think the C5 ZO6 had an aluminum frame. The one in mine sure isn't steel - not magnetic.

These are rather consistent tests by the same magazine and emphasize the point. An '04 ZO6 with a Magnusen and brake/wheel/other upgrades would cost about $50K and perform roughly as good as a stock new one. You would not have the glamour of the new, but you'd have the fun of customized your own unique ride, and $15k left over.
Of course, the wheels and tires to equal the new Z will be a couple grand, CF body parts a few more, and you still have at best, a 2 year old car that you will have a hard time selling, while you can flip a new Z for thousands more than MSRP, if you were lucky enough to get one at that price.

To be honest it's a totaly different car. The C6 Z06 is by far a "better" car so to speak. They are a little heavier than an 01-04 Z thought. At least that is what i read today. I believe the mag said it was 3132lbs. In contrast my car was 3080lbs with 1/2 a tank of gas. This was w/out me of course. I love my Z06 but i would almost kill to get a new Z06. To answer you question, yes it's a totaly different car. It's worth the heavy price tag. As soon as these car are out for a few years i'd love to get one.
