Speed Channel Test Drive presents one of the most exciting production cars to hit the streets in years: Corvette’s brand new 2006 Z06 supercar.
Tommy Kendall, no slouch himself when it comes to putting a sports car through its paces, is joined by 4-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon, factory Corvette driver Johnny O'Connell, and Corvette Chief engineer, Dave Hill, as Test Drive travels from Kentucky, to Georgia, to Le Mans, France.
This Test Drive is all about performance, and the 6th generation Corvette Z06 is performance with a capital “P”. With a 7-litre, 505 horsepower, all-aluminum pushrod V8 under the hood, and a light and stiff Corvette chassis riding on huge Goodyears, the Z06 is capable of performance that surpasses rival supercars costing four-times the money. Watch Test Drive yourself and you’ll see why Auto Week says that at $66,000.00, the new Z06 is the “Greatest Value in Supercar History” .

Weight: The Z06 weighs in at a svelte 3132 lbs. (Ferrari F430? – 3380lbs; carbon fibre Porsche Carrera GT? – 3140 lbs and a cool $446,000.00)
Power: The Z06 gets more performance out of the engine by maximizing airflow, reducing valvetrain weight and increasing stiffness. The dry-sump lubrication system, CNC-ported cylinder heads, titanium valves and connecting rods, forged steel crankshafts, and plate-honed cylinder bores are a direct off-shoot of the C6R racing Corvette, and combined, result in a big engine that revs like a small one – it revs to 7000 rpm with a 6300 rpm horsepower peak, producing an astonishing 505 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque.
Handling: Power to weight ratio is where its at, baby. The new Z06 leverages its astonishing performance with a chassis that combines the use of aluminum construction and a magnesium fixed roof that increase the Z06’s bending stiffness 10 percent and torsional rigidity 15 percent over the base Corvette.

But while you’re getting a towel and setting your Tivo, consider that the new Z06 delivers all of the world-beating performance in an iconic package that is extremely driveable day-to-day. To demonstrate this, Tommy Kendall begins Test Drive with a sprint through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, all the while enjoying the creature comforts of a luxury car with the technology and prowess of a fighter jet (nav system, HUD display, satellite radio...) After warming up on the scenic route, Kendall heads across the pond to Le Mans, France.
They say France is for lovers, and if that’s true, than the Z06 is the hotheaded, high-spirited love child of the 4-time 24hrs of Le Mans winning C6.R racing Corvettes. While Team Corvette throws down against the likes of Ferrari and Aston Martin, Corvette Chief engineer Dave Hill explains the two-way relationship between the racing program and production Corvettes. Corvette racing driver Johnny O’Connell takes a break from the action to chime in.
Next, Test Drive returns to the States to hook up with 4-time NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon at Road Atlanta. To get the party started, Tommy Kendall and Johnny O’Connell hit the track in separate Z06’s. Kendall and O’Connell are both experienced racers who hate to give up an inch on the track...and with the Z06 capable of producing a top speed of 198 mph and sticking a 1.04 lateral g-force load, things are bound to get a little testy!
Gordon, one of the biggest stars in American sports, joins the fray to share his impressions on how far Corvette has come, how it compares to the world’s other top sports cars, and how the car is not only easy on the eyes, but performs like no other.
Like Kendall and O’Connell, Gordon is a racer, so the only way to get a true impression of a car like the Z06 is on the track. Jeff and Tommy put the two Z06’s through their paces again, and just when you think that the distinctive Z06’s will be returned to the paddock unscathed...O’Connell appears in the rearview mirror in his racing C6.R - this is gonna be good!
