Default MAF Screen

Has anyone ever seen any actual improvements in HP/ TQ numbers by removing their MAF screen, I'm going to step up to a 90mm soon so its not a big deal I'm just curious whether or not it actually does anything?

No hp gains. The 97-00 MF is good for about 500 HP and the 01+ is good for about 570 HP...That is engine dyno HP, chassis dyno HP could be anything--most lose 50-80 hp. 90 MAF is great for big cubes, FI and NO2, but can be difficult to tune. GM waited until the LS2 CAN PCM came out before introducing the 90, they felt the regular PCM was not fast enough to handle the needed parameters.

Yes the screen is a restriction and this was one of the combined efforts by GM engineering to get Z06 from 385 hp to 405hp, removing the screen. They found it to be a restriction and really no need for it on a straight shot of air, compared to set-ups that have a 90* turn, then it's good for straighting the air flow out.

you might see more problems than good from that.

GM was able to get about 2.5 hp by making the change, they also changed the PCM tune get the HP. 15 of the HP came from the Head and cam changes and another 2.5 from the air filter change. That was from the cheif engineer on the project.

And progressively more as mods are added. can you give me the source of this info as I would like to read this, thanks.

Most the gains were from the new zo6 cam.

Leave your screen in,it evens the air flow thru the MAF for a better a/f mix,some folks go lean as some air passes thru the MAF unmetered,on my c5,i ported the MAF,descreened it,and i would always go into the low octane table (drops timing),due the car going lean and knocking.Read the tunning section,#1 MAF mod...leave it stock.

Ported and aftermarket MAFs are the source of most problems. Even so, if staying basically stock and no tuning program, leave it by all means. This is a very common mod in nitrous world, and few issues if any.
