Default part help

when doing a cam only swap, what do they use to keep the lifters from dropping when they are pulling out the cam?

Nothing really man. Just do a full rotation of the camshaft(the original one, iwhile in the valley)....all the lifters should go up, and stay right where they are, in the UP position. Don't do the swap, or should I say don't remove the original camshaft until you have the other to replace it with, immediatly. The lifters will stay in place.

Do it slowly, take your time, and you won't have a problem.

PM me if you need any torque specs, etc etc

LS1 Camshaft Installation Tool
This is the correct tool, it is a bit pricey, but it sure beats having to do an astronomical amount of work if a lifter falls.

I have done it with just rolling the cam a few times and getting the lifters to stay up, but if they do decide to fall, that really really sucks.

Speed up your LS1 cam installation with JPR's new cam installation tool. These slipper handles are designed to support the lifters in the engine while you remove and replace your camshaft. No need to hurry because there is no fear of the lifters falling while using this tool. Designed to work with OEM style lifters and will not work with Comp "R" lifters.

All the lifters "should" stay up after you rotate the cam a few times. The only thing holding them in there is friction. Buy a wooden dowel for $2.00.. or the correct tool for $100. Both will do the job

Used a fiberglass rod from home depot. It's a marking rod about 5/16" or so. It was perfect, cut it in 1/2 and good to go. Perfect length for each side, and was like $3.

I dont trust, just spinning the lifters. Buddy of mine has a PIMP tool he machined for doing cam installs. Does them everyday as a technician. It's a lil overkill, but nice PIMP tool.

No I am not kidding. I have never done a cam swap on an LS1 before. And thanks for assuming I am stupid. I asked because I don't know. Are you going to answer my question or not.

There are 2 holes in the front of the block once you remove the cam retainer plate. Basically you spin the cam to move all the lifters up in the bores. Then stick the rods in. It will hold the lifters in the up position. What the rod does is that it holds against each lifter and keeps them in place. There is a ridge on the side of the lifter that it contacts. Thats why it holds. I have had no problems doing it this way insead of buying the "baller expensive" tools.
