Shift light on HUD?

Don't know anyone running under the Chevy spec that uses the HUD for shift assistance. So what you do depends on your aspirations.
The fast stock guys tend to go by sound and feel on the 1-2; then steal glances at the tac on the 2-3 when it sounds ripe; and watch the tac for the 3-4. The needle and HUD shift light lag behind actual rpm due to the latency in the comms bus.

With HP Tuners my tuner was able to use my CAGS light as a shift light, I have it set to come on at 6300 and my rev limit set to 6600. While making a run I don't even have to glance at the gauge cluster, I can see the skip shift light out of the corner of my eye.
If you use the shift light on the HUD you will definitely tag the limiter in first gear and your times will suffer.
