Default Steering

Ok... So about a month ago i started to notice a popping sound/viberation when i turn either direction. I can't find the source of the problem.

I can say that the powering steering fluid was over filled.. ya i know... and not just a little.. I'm not sure how screwed that up but some how i did... lets assume for a min that it's because of my fuild being over filled. What kinda damage would i have caused... I wish i could say this was someone else's fault but i know better... I f'd up...

btw turning is free and easy... so power steering deff works but as you turn you can mostly feel/hear the popping... it pops the more you turn it out... not louder popping just more of it...

example zig zaging within say a lane might yeild 1 pop both ways... a full turn might yield 3 pops both ways.

just jacked the car up in the air and let the tires hang free... got in and turned the wheels no popping... so what is different about turning wheel with the wheels free vs when on the ground???? the obvious comes to mind but i can't think of how this helps me if at all figure out what is wrong.. btw car was no running for this test...

Lugs? If none of the above, I'd be suspicious of the rack and pinion.

I've got this same thing. I thought it might be my brake indicator tabs popping on my slotted rotors, indicating that I needed to replace my brake pads. Hadn't had a chance to get under there and check yet.

Anyone else?

I would bring it to a trusted shop to see what they think if you cant find it. O r you could put it on an alignment rack that the car can still be loaded and get under it to see if you can see anything.

Back to the topic at hand... I did some more investigation and it doesn't appear that it is limited to turning while braking, which I originally thought. I was thinking it might be the rack. Even though the rack doesn't carry a load, the added resistance to steering from the tires being on the ground, may be enough to cause the popping noise inside the rack.

I know we can't be the only two people to have had this problem. Anyone else?

Failing that, what about control arm bushings? An acquaintance of mine is a hardcore autocrosser, and he has reported lots of trouble with these. May be worth a look? I forget, did you check the ball joints?

i'm calling the dealer right now and getting some metal end links.. I beleive these are found on the Z06. But are a better replacement than the stock plastic ones... After i swap them which may or may not be this weekend (moving/working).

Let me know how this comes out! I'll keep tinkering on mine to see if I can figure it out also.

Thanks!
