Exclamation Should I get a warranty on my 01 C5 Auto?

Car has 32k on the clock. It will be my daily driver. A fully loaded gold lexus warranty is $2300 for 3 years/36k miles (covers pretty much everything on the powertrain/drivetrain/suspension/electrical). That's about how much I'll likely put on it in 3 years times. I bought a warranty on my GTP and regretted it, b/c in the long run I only used it twice to replace some cracked c/v boots (and $1600 down the drain).

It's a warranty at a Lexus dealership, so if anything is wrong they hand you the keys to a brand new Lexus as a loaner--no questions asked. I just know I'm going to be modding it in a years' time, so don't want to waste money on the warranty if I'll never bring it in b/c of the mods anyways.

What do you guys think? Do enough parts tend to break on these cars that a warranty is worth it? Are repairs any different/pricier than the average f-body when they do break? Not likely to mess up the engine/tranny in stock or even mildly modded (headers/intake/tune) form? I've heard about the infamous Corvette tax, so want to be smart about avoiding the KY jelley when something breaks..

Thanks,
Tim

Hmmm.. Always a tossup. Is the Vette eligible for a GMPP warranty?

If you plan to extensively modify the car, definitely skip the warranty. If you're going to leave it alone, it might be worth considering. Depends how comfortable you are working on the car should problems arise.

I'm about a 3 maybe 4 mechncially, on a scale of 1-10 (1 being lowest, 10 being highest). I've done a lot of bolt-on stuff but never anything serious like tear an engine apart or replace drivetrain components.

What I'm worried about is expensive parts breaking and the labor being expensive to fix them since it's a corvette.

Probably the most I'm going to do to the car while it's my daily driver is lid/headers/LSX/tb/catback. How are the rearends and transaxle on the 'vettes (can they hold 330 rwhp and some decent launches pretty well?).

Also, can anyone recommend a good tuner package (HPTuners I'm guessing?).

I had the steering lock problem as well as a leaky rear (had to reseal twice). Hard decision. Have these been taken care of on the car?

I got an extended GMPP on mine. After I did it I was a little pissed because I want to H/C the car. But I found an oil leak on the rear sealand they had to fix it which was a rather large job and it saved my ****. Now my diff is leaking and I need to get that fixed. I understand there is a recall for that. something about a warped cover.

H/C all depends on how well you know the service mgr. as to whether it would affect your GMPP

Well,....... I'm not going to tell you what to do,.....what I WILL do is, tell you what I do! Ive bought the Extended warranty with the last 9 vehicles that I have bought! And EVERYONE of them paid for its self some MANY times over!!! Do you know what a new tranny costs for a C-5???? I also did a hell of a lot of OTHER repairs on the SAME warranty!! I will never invest so much money in anything without an Insurance policy witch is what the x-tended policy really is!

If you are going to keep it stock then you could beat on it guilt free without worrying about replacing anything with the warranty. Might be more beneficial for you but I think it is too difficult to resist the modding urge.

Thanks guys, I talked them down to 2g's on the 3 year / 36k warranty. All in all not too bad for peace of mind on a used Vette. I took the car on the highway for the first time after getting it today and noticed a loud hissing sound coming from the targa top, within inches of my left ear. I'm thinking weather stripping. Does this sound familiar? I thought I heard something about this in the FAQ. Easy fix?

Also at an idle with the window down I can hear some kind of loud ticking / tapping as the engine idles. Does this sound like an exhaust leak? Car is 100% stock, very clean, no mods (I love the interior on the vette, btw ;-).

Thanks,
Tim
