Default Oil pressure sending unit....

My neighbor (2002 c5) asked me if I wanted to replace his oil pressure sending unit, told me his guage pegged out one day and has been there for a few weeks. I removed the manifold etc., and noticed the sensor is different than the F-body.

When I removed the sensor I noticed there was oil coming through into the actual electrical plug area, figured the sensor just cracked or something. I cleaned out the plug of oil, put the new sensor in, plugged it up, everything was golden and working perfectly.

Week later he tells me it's doing the same thing again. Anyone have any experience with this? Is there something I don't know about the 'vette sending units? I used to a TQ wrench and installed the new sensor using the proper socket (sending unit socket) and to the correct TQ spec, not sure what's going on.

Thanks guys.

The Corvette's only mods are K&N intake kit (FIPK I guess), HPP3 (not my idea), and a NOS brand plate system (125hp).

C5 oil pressure sending units are notorious for going bad. Some of them just like you described (replaced it, worked fine, then went bad again). Fortunately I have had 3 C5s, none of which have had that problem (ever).

Some guys have gone as far as relocating the sender so it's easier to swap.

Mine has gone out once but a friend of mine went thru 3 in 2 months. The sensor appears to be of less than great quality.

Well at least I know what the problem is now.

I think we're just going to say screw it. He's got a warranty on the car for another couple of years, so if anything screws up, we'll just take the kit off of it and reload the stock tune.

If it still has an OEM warranty I'd just take it to the dealership for a replacement. There's no way anybody would ever tell him the OP sending unit is broken due to the mods he has installed (especially with how frequently they die on their own!)

BTW some people have had better luck with one brand/type of sending unit than another. I've never had the problem so I never researched it deeply but I remember reading it on Corvette Forum a while back.

I don't think he wants to risk bringing it in with the nitrous installed and getting red flagged or something. He doesn't mind giving me $100 to yank the manifold each time (only takes a few minutes), so I may try throwing another one on after I tell him about this.

I'll do a little reading on it over on CF. Thanks for the info Tony!

My addition to that thread is on page 4 (I think) and it shows how to access the sending unit without removing the intake and without all the extra parts to relocate.

That's called "a Corvette owner".

I tried to tell him I'd do it for $50, but he'd have none of that.

Thanks for all the help guys.
