Why could you not use the VIN that came with the new PCM?

I was just curious, if you have the motor out would it work to just change the engine harness and computer with a newer 99. I have a 98 corvette and I plan on buying a 99 harness and computer out of a TA. Will this work for me?

Cool thanks for the reply, So the 99 TA comp will work just not the harness. But being I have hp tuners I will have to buy EFI live correct to make all the program changes. I do thank you for the help and have plenty of exp repinning plugs I was an AFIN troop on the C-17 till I changed to LM just have to be so tedious on a multi pin plug like that.

Eurospec, i am attempting a similar swap like yours in my 98 camaro a4 to a 02 ecm. i have the ecm diagram and have figured out where most of the pins are with the exception of some wires are not available from one to the other. Did you have any extra pins that were not used or not enough (example, i dont need egr, but there are alot more 5v references needed on the 02 that are not on the 98 wiring harness). I'm confused! Thanks in advance for any info, Carlos R.

Yes there are alot of things on the 02 that will not be used, just find homes for the wires you do have in your pcm, and dont worry about what the 02 had.

I am really considering doing this swap too, but would it be worth it to me? is the 98 pcm really that bad, or with the right tune can it be made just as good?

My general answer to this question is, if your sticking with bolt ons or a small cam, the 97-98 PCM should be just fine for you.

If your going big cam, nitrous, forced induction do the swap you wont regret it

all i have is exactly what is in my sig, but i plan on porting the heads, and adding a 100 shot of nitrous... im sorry i know you have prolly been asked this a thousand times, or that there are hundreds of threads on it but since you seem to be the guy that knows his stuff on this subject, what all is better between the two??? i thought you said something about a/f tables or spark tables... is an updated pcm just easier to tune or could it be done with the 98? I hope it doesnt seem like i asked the same question twice, im just really interested...

If your planning to run nitrous you should most defenetily do the swap, what would you say to having a full on maxx effort motor tune, and at the flip of your nitrous master arm switch your PCM will pull timing and add fuel so you have a safe nitrous tune? Best of both worlds.....

This is possible with EFI Lives custom operating system number 5, which is only avaliable for the 99-02 PCM

Default only efi live works on this swap?

I have a 98 ta and am going FI, but as I read I can only use efi live to accomplish this swap with tuning not hp tuners. Why?
