2002 Corvette Q1: LS1 have serial # stamp???
Hey all,
I'm about to buy what I'm told is a 2002 Corvette VIN G LS1 engine and transmission for a transplant into my 70 chevelle. Is the Corvette VIN stamped onto the block? If so, where?
Thanks
Rick

Not sure about the vin stamp... don't think so...
On the tranny, if it's from a Corvette you know it was bolted to the differential thereby making it a trans-axle assembly...
If it looks like a 700r4 in configuration (has a tail shaft) then it came from a Camaro/Trans Am.
If it is a true Corvette drivetrain... what are you gonna do about the transmission?
* Just so you know.... a 2002 year model LS1 is identical between the Corvette and F-body. In fact, having an F-body take out (engine/tranny bolted together) would probably be better for your application.

If its a complete takeout, then the 2002 corvette and f-body are most defenetily NOT the same, vette is fly by wire f-bod is cable throttle for example, along with all of the accesory mounting is completely different. Also the harnesses between a vette and f-body are considerably different.
If what your buying is just a longblock, its still not exactly the same, the oil pans are completely different.
As far as i know the vette vin is not stamped on the block, if it has accesories on it and the alternator is up high on drivers side its a vette, if its down low near the oil pan its an f-body.
You should also be able to identify it by the oil pan, if its a standard shaped oil pan its f-body, if its a strange batwing looking oil pan its a vette.

Thanks! I should know what I'm dealing with tomorrow. High mount accessories would probably be good. I'll ask in conversions/hybrids about oil pan being either OK or swap for F body unless it gets answered here.
