Synthetic Motor Oil Does anyone know where to find a Synthetic motor oil brand comparison that is not sponsored by a company that makes motor oil? I would like to start using Royal Purple in my Z06 but was wondering how it ranks among the other Synthetic oils.
not sure where to find the data you're looking for... but I just changed all fluids (engine/tranny/diff) with AMSOIL...
Supposed to be the best stuff available from what I've read on this site and from various literature, expensive as hell though.

i used royal purple untill i started reading on here about it, and alot of people was having issues with build up in the heads and oil pan from that stuff, just made me weary about it, just do a search on royal purple, and you will find that thread. was going to do amsoil, but i couldnt find it at any autoparts store around here, so i just went back with mobil 1 5w30

I see that Amsoil is supposed to be the best but according to who? Most oil brand comparisons you find online were conducted by Amsoil and of course they rate their oil # 1. I have been looking for a non bias oil comparison and have not been able to find it.
I personally witnesed a bearing stress test between Royal Purple, Mobil One, Castrol Syntec and Red Line in 1996 at an Oil and gas convention at the Marroit in Houston. Red Line had the best results closely followed by Royal Purple and Mobil One dead last with terrible results.

5w30 because it's what's recommended by chevy?

"If you have the 5.7L V8 engine, SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10W-30 if it's going to be 0 Degrees Fahrenheit or above.

I ran Redline in my Trans Am for years. If I ever modded the Vette, I'd go back to using Redline exclusively. Loved that stuff. I will definitely drop it into my C6 Z06 should the current plan (trading up between February and May of 2010) come to fruition.
